Barroso (region)
Barroso or Terras de Barroso (''Lands of Barroso'') is the traditional name of the region formed by the Portuguese municipalities of Montalegre and Boticas. The Terras de Barroso existed as an administrative division of Portugal from 1273 to 1876, and the term "Barroso" and "Barrosã/Barrosão" (adjective) continue to be widely used to refer to the distinctive and isolated heritage, culture and landscape of this area. The region was one of the first in Europe, in 2018, to be recognised by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation as a 'Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System.' Barroso is a Brazilian municipality located in the south of the state of Minas Gerais. Its population was 20,897 people living in an area of . The elevation is . The city belongs to the mesoregion of Campo das Vertentes and to the microregion of Barbacena. An important regional center, Barbacena, is located to the east and is connected by MG-265. The Barroso Commission was the European Commission in office from 22 November 2004 until 31 October 2014. Its President of the European Commission, president was José Durão Barroso, who presided over 27 other commissioners (one from Member state of the European Union, each of the states composing the European Union, aside from Portugal, which is Barroso's state). On 16 September 2009 Barroso was re-elected by the European Parliament for a further five years and his Commission was approved to take office on 9 February 2010. Barroso was at first seen as the lowest common denominator by outside commentators, but his proposed team of Commissioners earned him some respect before triggering a crisis when the European Parliament objected to some of them, forcing a reshuffle. Brazilian Ironclad Barroso
The Brazilian ironclad ''Barroso'' was an armoured gunboat built for the Brazilian Navy during the Paraguayan War in the mid-1860s. ''Barroso'' bombarded Paraguayan fortifications in 1866 and 1867 a number of times before she participated in the Passagem de Humaitá in February 1868. Afterwards the ship provided fire support for the army for the rest of the war. She was assigned to the Mato Grosso Flotilla after the war. ''Barroso'' was decommissioned in 1882, but was not scrapped until 1937. Design and description ''Barroso'' was designed to meet the need of the Brazilian Navy for a small, simple, shallow-draft armored ship capable of withstanding heavy fire. The ship is best characterized as a central battery design because the casemate did not extend the length of the ship. A bronze ram, long, was fitted.
