Barbara McLachlan
Barbara McLachlan is an American politician, educator, and former journalist serving as a member of the Colorado House of Representatives. She represents District 59, which covers Archuleta, Gunnison, Hinsdale, La Plata, Ouray, and San Juan counties. Early life and education Hall McLachlan was born in Lakewood, Colorado. She received a bachelor's degree in journalism from Colorado State University, a bachelor's degree in English from Fort Lewis College, a master's degree in learning and teaching from Regis University, and a certificate in college counseling from the University of California, Los Angeles. Career Prior to entering politics, McLachlan worked as a Durango High School and as an independent college consultant. She had previously worked as a journalist for the ''Durango Herald''. Ouray County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,874. The county seat is Ouray. Because of its rugged mountain topography, Ouray County is also known as the Switzerland of America. History Ouray County was formed out of San Juan County on 18 January 1877, the first county designated by the newly formed Colorado State Legislature. ''The Durango Herald'' is a newspaper in Durango, Colorado. The first edition of the ''Herald'' came out June 30, 1881. Two years later, the ''Herald'' merged with the ''Record'', which had started publishing in 1880, seven months before the ''Herald''. The modern ''Herald'' traces its roots to both papers but the current ''Herald'' nameplate cites 1881 as the paper's founding year. The paper was combined in 1952 after Arthur and Morley Cowles Ballantine purchased the ''Herald-Democrat'' and the ''News''. In 1960, the name was changed to ''The Durango Herald''. Arthur was co-editor and co-publisher of the paper from 1952 until 1975. Morley was also co-editor and co-publisher and took over as chairman and editor after Arthur's death. She served as editor until her death in 2009. Her son Richard Ballantine took over the role of publisher in 1980. Durango High School is a public high school in Durango, Colorado, United States. The school's historic building, now the district's administrative building, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the Colorado State Register of Historic Properties. The building opened in 1917, and served as a high school until it became the district administration building in 1976. History Durango's first high school opened in 1893. By early 1914, the school had problems with overcrowding, so plans were drawn up for a new building. The chosen site was between 12th and 13th Streets along East 2nd Avenue, and existing property owners were willing to sell. The optimal location for the building happened to be directly in the 2nd Avenue right-of-way, so the city abandoned the road and an alley in the 12th–13th Street block. San Juan County is a county located in the U.S. state of Colorado. As of the 2020 census, the population was 705, making it the least populous county in Colorado. The county seat and the only incorporated municipality in the county is Silverton.
