Barbara Frietchie (film)
''Barbara Frietchie'' is a 1924 American silent war drama film about an old woman who helps out soldiers during the American Civil War. It is based on the play of the same name by Clyde Fitch that had starred Julia Marlowe at the turn of the century which in turn was taken from the real-life story of Barbara Fritchie. There were two silent film versions, a 1915 version and 1924 version. The 1915 version, directed by Herbert Blaché, starred Mary Miles Minter and Anna Q. Nilsson. The 1924 version, filmed at Ince Studio now Culver Studios and directed by Lambert Hillyer, it starred Florence Vidor and Edmund Lowe. Lydia Knott, mother of director Hillyer and a well known character actress in her own right, appears quite prominently in this film as a member of the Frietchie family but for some reason she is uncredited. Lambert Hillyer (July 8, 1893 – July 5, 1969) was an American film director and screenwriter. He is best known today for his many western features, his horror films ''The Invisible Ray (1936 film), The Invisible Ray'' and ''Dracula's Daughter'', and the first ''Batman (serial), Batman'' serial. Biography Lambert Harwood Hillyer was born July 8, 1893, in Tyner, Indiana (his 1946 resumé amended this to South Bend, Indiana). His mother was character actress Lydia Knott. Mattie Peters (sometimes credited as Mammy Peters) was an American actress who was active in Hollywood in the 1920s. As a Black actress, few roles were open to her during the silent era, so she often appeared in "mammy" roles. Biography According to '' The California Eagle'', Peters started off her life in Chicago, where she worked as a caterer. After relocating to Los Angeles, she began appearing in motion pictures around 1920, although she was hesitant at first due to her Christian values. Gertrude Short
Carmen Gertrude Short (April 6, 1902 – July 31, 1968) was an American film actress of the silent and early sound era. She appeared in more than 130 films between 1912 and 1945. Biography Gertrude Short was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the daughter of actors Lewis and Stella Short. From 1913 to 1945, she acted on stage, on film, and in vaudeville. Short debuted on stage in ''The Story of the Golden Fleece'' in San Francisco when she was 5 years old. In her screen debut, she portrayed Little Eva in the silent film ''Uncle Tom's Cabin''. She went on to act in films through the 1930s and into the 1940s. Film companies with which she worked included Edison, Metro, Paramount, Robertson-Cole, and Universal. Charles Delaney
Charles Delaney (August 9, 1892 – August 31, 1959) was an American actor. Biography Delaney was born in New York City in 1892. He was originally a motor mechanic and having learned to fly during World War I, he started doing flying vaudeville acts on his return to civilian life before beginning to appear in films. He appeared in more than 90 films between 1913 and 1959. Delaney died in Hollywood in 1959. His final screen appearance was a supporting role in the independently produced low-budget feature '' The Beatniks'' which was released posthumously in 1960. Emmett Carleton King (May 31, 1865 – April 21, 1953) was an American actor of the stage and screen. Biography King began his acting career on stage. Biography Knott was born in Tyner, Indiana, the daughter of Lambert and Clarissa Knott. She died in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. She was the mother of director Lambert Hillyer. For years, Knott was David Higgins' leading lady. She acted in Repertory theatre, stock theater in Albany, Chicago, Cincinnati, and Toledo, among other cities.
