Ballad Of Casey Jones
"The Ballad of Casey Jones", also known as "Casey Jones, the Brave Engineer" or simply "Casey Jones", is a traditional American folk song about railroad engineer Casey Jones and his death at the controls of the train he was driving. It tells of how Jones and his fireman Sim Webb raced their locomotive to make up for lost time, but discovered another train ahead of them on the line, and how Jones remained on board to try to stop the train as Webb jumped to safety. It is song number 3247 in the Roud Folk Song Index. The song helped preserve the memory of Jones' feat down through the years in its 40 plus versions and enhanced Casey's legendary status to the extent that he has even become something of a mythological figure like Pecos Bill or Paul Bunyan to the uninformed. ''Anthology of American Folk Music'' is a three-volume compilation album released in August 1952 by Folkways Records. The album was compiled by experimental filmmaker Harry Smith from his own personal collection of 78 rpm records. It consists of eighty-four recordings of American folk, blues and country music made and issued from 1926 to 1933 by a variety of performers, divided into three categories: "Ballads", "Social music", and "Songs." Upon its release the Anthology sold relatively poorly and had no notable early coverage besides a minor mention in '' Sing Out!'' magazine in 1958. Lindley Armstrong "Spike" Jones (December 14, 1911 – May 1, 1965) was an American musician, bandleader and conductor specializing in spoof arrangements and satire of popular songs and classical music. Ballads receiving the Jones treatment were punctuated with various sound effects, including gunshots, whistles, cowbells, hiccups, burps, sneezes, animal sounds and outlandish and comedic vocals. Jones and his band recorded for RCA Victor under the title Spike Jones and His City Slickers from the early 1940s to the mid-1950s, and they toured the United States and Canada as "The Musical Depreciation Revue". Folk-Legacy Records
Folk-Legacy Records was an independent record label specializing in traditional and contemporary folk music of the English-speaking world. It was founded in 1961 by Sandy and Caroline Paton and Lee Baker Haggerty. The label recorded Frank Proffitt and released a memorial album after his death. Folk-Legacy has produced more than 120 recordings. Recording and cover photographs were done by Sandy Paton while Haggerty was the business manager. Sandy and Caroline were singers in their own right, having been designated the Connecticut State Troubadours for 1993–1994. They lived in Sharon, Connecticut until Sandy's death in 2009. In 2019, the label's collection was transferred to Smithsonian Folkways. Joe Hickerson
Joseph C. Hickerson (born October 20, 1935, in Highland Park, Illinois) is an American folk music, folk singer and musicologist. A graduate of Oberlin College, for 35 years (1963–1998) he was Librarian and Director of the Archive of Folk Culture, Archive of Folk Song at the American Folklife Center of the Library of Congress. Joe brought together the Ukrainian source and his own verses to create the basis for "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" in collaboration with Pete Seeger. He participated in the first LP recording of "Kumbayah". Along with Dave Guard, he is credited with the creation of the Kingston Trio's version of "Bonny Hielan Laddie". He is a lecturer, researcher, and performer, especially in New York, Michigan, and the Chicago area. he is living in Portland, Oregon. Robert Romeo De Cormier Jr. (January 7, 1922 – November 7, 2017), sometimes known as Robert Corman, was an American musical conductor, arranger, and director. He arranged music for many singers and groups, including Harry Belafonte and Peter, Paul and Mary, and worked with Milt Okun. Biography Robert De Cormier was born in Farmingdale, New York, and grew up in Poughkeepsie, New York. His father was a shop teacher of French-Canadian heritage, and his mother was a Swedish-born guitarist. De Cormier took up the trumpet at age 7, and continued while attending Colby College in Maine and the University of New Mexico. His trumpet playing ended during World War II, when a German mortar shell nearly severed his right wrist while his Army infantry unit was advancing toward the Rhine River. Elizabeth Cotten
Elizabeth "Libba" Cotten ( Nevills; January 5, 1893 – June 29, 1987) was an influential American folk and blues musician. She was a self-taught left-handed guitarist who played a guitar strung for a right-handed player, but played it upside down. This position meant that she would play the bass lines with her fingers and the melody with her thumb. Her signature alternating bass style has become known as "Cotten picking". NPR stated "her influence has reverberated through the generations, permeating every genre of music." Her album '' Folksongs and Instrumentals with Guitar'' (1958), was placed into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress, and was deemed as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant". The Golden Gate Quartet (a.k.a. The Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet) is an American vocal group. It was formed in 1934 and, with changes in membership, remains active. Origins and early career The group was founded as the Golden Gate Jubilee Singers in 1934, by four students at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk, Virginia. Milton Theodore Okun (December 23, 1923 – November 15, 2016) was an American arranger, record producer, conductor, singer and founder of Cherry Lane Music Publishing Company, Inc. He transformed the careers of a dozen or more major U.S. artists who, under Okun's tutelage, became some of the most successful musical acts of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.
