BMW OHV V8 Engine
The BMW OHV V8 is an overhead valve V8 petrol engine produced from 1954 to 1965. It is BMW's first V8 engine, and BMW did not produce another V8 automobile engine until the BMW M60 in 1992. The engine does not have an official model code, therefore it is often identified through being the only overhead valve ("OHV") V8 engine produced by BMW, since all other BMW V8 engines use a Overhead camshaft#Dual overhead camshaft, dual overhead camshaft valvetrain. Although not a direct replacement, in 1965 the six-cylinder BMW M30 engine took the OHV V8's place at the top of BMW's engine range. Development The BMW 501, which began production in 1952, was the first car produced by BMW after World War II. V8 Engine
A V8 engine is an eight- cylinder piston engine in which two banks of four cylinders share a common crankshaft and are arranged in a V configuration. Origins The first known V8 was the Antoinette, designed by Léon Levavasseur, and built in 1904 by the French Antoinette company for use in speedboat racing, cars, and later, airplanes. Also in 1904, V8 engines began small-scale production by Renault and Buchet for use in race cars. Design V-angle Most engines use a V-angle (the angle between the two banks of cylinders) of 90 degrees. This angle results in good engine balance, which results in low vibrations. However, the downside is the greater width of the engine compared to those that use a smaller V-angle. BMW 507
The BMW 507 is a Grand Tourer, grand touring Roadster (automobile), convertible that was produced by German automobile manufacturer BMW from 1956 until 1959. Initially intended to be exported to the United States at a rate of thousands per year, it ended up being too expensive, resulting in a total production figure of 252 cars and heavy financial losses for BMW. BMW 503
The BMW 503 is a two-door 2+2 (car body style), 2+2 grand tourer, gran turismo manufactured by German automaker BMW from 1956 until 1959. The company developed the 503, built in coupé and cabriolet body styles, alongside the BMW 507, 507 Roadster (automobile), roadster. The 503 and 507 cost about twice their projected price and did not recover their development costs. During production from May 1956 to March 1959, 413 units of the 503 were built, 139 of which were Cabriolets. Despite being a prestige model, it resulted in heavy losses for BMW. Concept and design Hanns Grewenig, sales manager of BMW, repeatedly requested the development of a sports car based on their BMW 501, 501 and 502 luxury cars, and which could take advantage of their new 3.2 L V8 all-aluminium engine.
