BBDO is a worldwide advertising agency network, with its headquarters in New York City. The agency originated in 1891 with the George Batten Company, and in 1928, through a merger with Barton, Durstine & Osborn (BDO), the agency became Batten, Barton, Durstine & Osborn. With more than 15,000 employees at 289 offices in 81 countries, it is the largest of three global networks of agencies (BBDO, DDB and TBWA) in the portfolio of Omnicom Group. Roy Sarles Durstine (December 13, 1886 – November 28, 1962) was an American newspaper reporter, author, and advertising executive who co-founded BBDO and since 1939 was president of Roy S. Durstine, Inc. Early life Durstine was born on December 13, 1886, in Jamestown, North Dakota. He attended Lawrenceville School from 1901 to 1904, and graduated from Princeton University in 1908 with a B.A. in politics, history, and economics. At Princeton, he was chairman of '' The Princeton Tiger,'' president of the Triangle Club, and a member of the Cap and Gown Club. Bruce Fairchild Barton (August 5, 1886 – July 5, 1967) was an American author, advertising executive, and Republican politician. He represented Manhattan in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1937 to 1941. In 1940, he ran for election to the U.S. Senate, but was defeated by incumbent Senator James M. Mead. Alex Faickney Osborn (May 24, 1888 – May 5, 1966) was an American advertising executive and the author of the creativity technique named ''brainstorming''. Founding of BBDO In 1919, Osborn joined with Bruce Fairchild Barton and Roy Sarles Durstine to form the BDO advertising agency. Osborn acted as manager of BDO's Buffalo branch. He was largely responsible for the 1928 merger of BDO (Barton, Durstine & Osborn) with the George Batten Company to create BBDO. After years of success and having survived the Great Depression, BBDO underwent a crisis in 1938, losing many of its clients and key personnel. When the show debuted, there was no agreement on its title. George Batten (June 19, 1854 – February 16, 1918) was an American advertising executive who opened the George Batten Newspaper Advertising Agency in New York City in 1891. Biography George Batten was born in Gloucester County, New Jersey on June 19, 1854. He attended private schools, and worked as a traveling salesman for the Philadelphia wool manufacturer Folwell Brother & Company for ten years. He next became manager of the Religious Press Association of Philadelphia. He married Carrie H. Morgan in 1879, and they had two children. She died in 1884, and he remarried to Lillie Idel Shivers on January 26, 1887. They had three children together.
