B-unit
A B-unit, in rail terminology, railroad terminology, is a locomotive unit (generally a diesel locomotive) which does not have a control cab (locomotive), cab or crew compartment, and must therefore be operated in tandem with another Railway coupling, coupled locomotive with a cab (an A-unit). The terms booster unit and cabless are also used. The concept is largely confined to North America and post-Soviet countries. Elsewhere, locomotives without driving cabs are rare. A B-unit is distinct from a Slug (railroad), slug unit, which only has traction motors and in certain instances may have a cab. The term primarily is applied to freight locomotives, but can be applied to passenger multiple units as well in some cases for when motor cars are put in the middle of trains. In practice however, the term is rarely used to describe multiple unit trains, and in many circumstances the non-cab cars are directly or indirectly permanently attached to a cab car. A-unit
An A-unit, in railroad terminology, is a diesel locomotive (or more rarely an electric locomotive) equipped with a driving cab and a control system to control other locomotives in a multiple unit, and therefore able to be the lead unit in a consist of several locomotives controlled from a single position. This terminology is generally used in North America, since only there was it commonplace to build B-units—cabless locomotive units which normally could not lead a train. Typical features Typical driving cab features, and therefore A-unit features, include windshields, rectangular side windows, crew seats, heating, and sometimes, radios, air conditioning and toilets. B-units always lack all of these features, except that some EMD F-units have an extra porthole-style side window(s) for a hostler (an employee permitted to move a locomotive in a yard only, not on the road). EMD FT
The EMD FT is a diesel-electric locomotive that was produced between March 1939 and November 1945, by General Motors' Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC), later known as GM Electro-Motive Division (EMD). The "F" stood for Fourteen Hundred (1400) horsepower (rounded from 1350) and the "T" for Twin, as it came standard in a two-unit set. The design was developed from the TA model built for the C,RI&P in 1937, and was similar in cylinder count, axle count, length, and layout. All told 555 cab-equipped ”A” units were built, along with 541 cabless booster or ”B” units, for a grand total of 1,096 units. The locomotives were all sold to customers in the United States. It was the first model in EMD's very successful F-unit series of cab unit freight diesels and was the locomotive that convinced many U.S. railroads that the diesel-electric freight locomotive was the future. Haysi Railroad
The Haysi Railroad Company (reporting mark HRR) was a terminal/switching railroad that owned and operated seven miles of track from Haysi, Virginia, to Vicey, Virginia. The railroad was known most for its unusual motive power. History The Haysi Railroad was founded in February 1970, after the Clinchfield railroad completed its Greenbrier Branch from Haysi-Vicey Virginia. HRR was controlled by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad and Louisville and Nashville Railroad (later Family Lines System holding company in November 1972). It served coal mines in and around Haysi, Virginia. On June 1, 1983, the Seaboard System merged the Haysi Railroad, ending its existence as an independent entity. In 2007 the last of the coal operations on the line shut down, and since then the line has been unmaintained by CSX, virtually abandoned. Slug (railroad)
In railroading, a slug is a version of a diesel–electric locomotive which lacks a Prime mover (locomotive), prime mover and often a cab. It derives the electrical power needed to operate its traction motors and motor controls from a fully-powered mother locomotive. At low speeds the drawing (or regenerative braking, braking) force a diesel–electric locomotive can produce is often limited by its traction motors or the grip of its drive wheels on the track, not the capability of its diesel engine(s). A slug adds more traction motors and drive wheels to both use more of the power the mother's engine can produce that cannot otherwise be used at low speeds and provide better braking, without the expense of a full locomotive. EMD GP60B
The EMD GP60 is a model of 4-axle ( B-B) diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1985 and 1994. The GP60 was EMD's first engine that was classified as a "third-generation" locomotive. Hidden behind the electrical cabinet doors on the rear wall of the cab, the GP60 concealed a trio of microprocessors that monitored and managed a host of engine, cooling system and control functions. The engine's on-board microprocessors replaced hundreds of wiring circuits, dozens of relays and all but one module card, making it an improvement among EMD's engines. GE BQ23-7
The GE BQ23-7 was a model of diesel locomotive manufactured by General Electric, a variant of the B23-7 built between 1978 and 1979 (the 'Q' stood for "crew Quarters"). It was mechanically identical to a regular B23-7, but equipped with an enlarged operating cab for accommodating the train crew, thus making a case for eliminating the caboose from the rear of freight trains. SCL no.5130-5139 were the only ones built. The EMD E8 is a , A1A-A1A passenger-train locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division (EMD) of La Grange, Illinois. A total of 450 cab versions, or E8As, were built from January 1950 to January 1954, 447 for the U.S. and 3 for Canada. 46 E8Bs were built from December 1950 to January 1954, all for the U.S. The 2,250 hp came from two 12 cylinder model 567B engines, each driving a generator to power the two traction motors on one truck.
