Averof Neofytou
Averof Neofytou ( el, Αβέρωφ Νεοφύτου; born 31 July 1961) is a Cypriot politician, who is the President of the ruling Democratic Rally (DISY) party since 2013, and serves as Member of the House of Representatives since 2006, having previously served in the position from 1996 to 1999. Prior to his election to parliament, which he briefly left to serve as Minister of Communications and Works, he was active in local politics and served as Mayor of his hometown, Polis, from 1991 to 1998. On 20 March 2022, he was confirmed as DISY's candidate for the 2023 Cypriot presidential election. Early life and education Averof Neofytou was born in Argaka, Paphos, in a non-political family. He completed his secondary education in the public school of Polis Chrysochous in Paphos. He studied Economics and Accountancy at the New York Institute of Technology. Democratic Rally
The Democratic Rally ( el, Δημοκρατικός Συναγερμός, translit=Dimokratikós Sinagermós, ΔΗΣΥ/DISY) is a liberal-conservative, Christian-democratic political party in Cyprus led by Averof Neofytou. The party was founded on 4 July 1976 by veteran politician Glafcos Clerides. Clerides served as the president of Cyprus from 1993 until 2003. The current President of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades (in office since 2013), is a member and former leader of the party. Overview DISY is a member of the European People's Party (EPP). Polis Chrysochous
Polis (or Polis Chrysochous; el, Πόλη Χρυσοχούς or Πόλις Χρυσοχούς, tr, Poli) is a town at the north-west end of the island of Cyprus, at the centre of Chrysochous Bay, and on the edge of the Akamas peninsula nature reserve. Polis is served by the fishing port of Latchi. History From the Ottoman period onwards, Polis became a mixed town, having sizeable Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The 1831 census, which recorded only males, showed a total male population of 150 with a Turkish Cypriot majority. The European People's Party (EPP) is a European political party with Christian-democratic, conservative, and liberal-conservative member parties. A transnational organisation, it is composed of other political parties. Founded by primarily Christian-democratic parties in 1976, it has since broadened its membership to include liberal-conservative parties and parties with other centre-right political perspectives. On 31 May 2022, the party elected as its President Manfred Weber, who was also EPP's '' Spitzenkandidat'' in 2019. Greek Cypriots or Cypriot Greeks ( el, Ελληνοκύπριοι, Ellinokýprioi, tr, Kıbrıs Rumları) are the ethnic Greek population of Cyprus, forming the island's largest ethnolinguistic community. According to the 2011 census, 659,115 respondents recorded their ethnicity as Greek, forming almost 99% of the 667,398 Cypriot citizens and over 78% of the 840,407 total residents of the area controlled by the Republic of Cyprus.
