Autonomist Party (Puerto Rico)
The Puerto Rican Autonomist Party ( es, Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño) was a political party in Puerto Rico founded in 1887. The Party was founded in Ponce, Puerto Rico, and its first chairman was Román Baldorioty de Castro. He was followed by Martin Corchado, a prominent physician from Ponce. Juan Hernández López was one of the co-authors of its program in 1897. The Party sought to establish an independent government for Puerto Rico under the Spanish colonial system. The party advocated self-rule, but not independence from Spain. It envisioned decentralized control by Spain, and the strongest possible local government. To provide a voice for the Autonomist Party, Luis Muñoz Rivera, one of its founders, founded the newspaper ''La Democracia'' (The Democracy). Puerto Rico

Román Baldorioty De Castro
Román Baldorioty de Castro (23 February 1822 – 30 September 1889) was Puerto Rican abolitionist and spokesman for the island's right to self-determination. In 1870, he was elected as a deputy in the Cortes Generales, the Spanish parliament, where he promoted abolition of slavery. In 1887, Baldorioty de Castro was the founder of the ''Partido Autonomista'' (Autonomist Party), also known as "Partido Autonomista Puro" (Pure Autonomous Party), "Partido Histórico" (Historic Party), and "Partido Ortodoxo" (Orthodox Party). Early years Baldorioty de Castro was born in Guaynabo to a poor family. Juan Hernández López
Juan Hernández López (March 1859 – May 17, 1944) was a Puerto Rican politician, senator, and attorney. He was a member of the Senate from 1921 to 1933, and served as its President pro tempore from 1921 to 1924, under Antonio R. Barceló. Biography Juan Hernández López was born in March 1859 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He studied in Spain, graduating in 1881. After that, he returned to Puerto Rico to work as an attorney. He joined the Autonomist Party with Román Baldorioty de Castro, and served as one of its secretaries and co-author of its program in 1887. Hernández collaborated with the newspaper ''El Clamor del País'' and defended journalists that were persecuted for political reasons. He also presided the Ateneo Puertorriqueño and was Vice-president of his own party during Luis Muñoz Rivera's presidency in 1897. Luis Muñoz Rivera
Luis Muñoz Rivera (July 17, 1859 – November 15, 1916) was a Puerto Rican poet, journalist and politician. He was a major figure in the struggle for political autonomy of Puerto Rico in union with Spain. In 1887, Muñoz Rivera became part of the leadership of a newly formed Autonomist Party. In 1889, he successfully ran a campaign for the position of delegate in the district of Caguas. Subsequently, Muñoz Rivera was a member of a group organized by the party to discuss proposals of autonomy with Práxedes Mateo Sagasta, who would grant Puerto Rico an autonomous government following his election. He served as Chief of the Cabinet of this government. On August 13, 1898, the Treaty of Paris transferred possession of Puerto Rico from Spain to the United States and a military government was established. Praxedes Mateo Sagasta
Saint Praxedes is a traditional Christian saint of the 2nd century. Her name is sometimes rendered as Praxedis (Πραξηδίς) or Praxed. Biography Little is known about Praxedes, and not all accounts agree. According to Jacobus de Voragine's ''The Golden Legend'', Praxedes was the sister of Saint Pudentiana; their brothers were Saint Donatus and Saint Timothy. During one of the periods of persecution, they buried the bodies of Christians and distributed goods to the poor. De Voragine's brief account states they died in 165, "in the reign of Emperors Marcus and Antoninus II." Sabine Baring-Gould, in the entry for Saint Novatus, states that the holy virgin Praxedes was a daughter of Saint Pudens, sister of Saint Pudentiana, and that her brothers were Saint Novatus and Saint Timothy.
