Australian rules football in Africa is most organised in South Africa, although there are programs under development in many African nations including Botswana, Egypt, Ghana, Kenya and Zimbabwe and there are plans to introduce the sport into more African countries. Immigration to Australia saw a rise in the number of Africans playing in the Australian Football League, among the first were African-Americans like Tom Banks and South Africans including Aubrey MacKenzie and Damien Cupido. Kevin Sheedy predicted an African future for the AFL when he recruited Ethiopian Goaner Tutlan in 2004. The success of Majak Daw saw a rise in the popularity of AFL among South Sudanese migrants which have attracted the attention of AFL recruiters in search for the combination of height and athleticism. Changkuoth Jiath ( ; born 13 June 1999) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Hawthorn Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Born in Ethiopia to South Sudanese parents, Jiath moved to Australia when he was six years old. Living in the town of Morwell he played his junior football at the Morwell Youth Club. Changkuoth then went on to play senior football at the Morwell Tigers Football Club. Due to his name being quite hard for others to pronounce Jiath adopted the nickname "CJ" to make it easier for people to address him. Brandon Walker
Brandon Walker (born 17 October 2002) is an Australian rules football player who plays for Fremantle in the Australian Football League (AFL). A member of Fremantle's Next Generation Academy (NGA) due to being born in Ghana, Walker was drafted with the 50th selection in the 2020 national draft, when Fremantle matched Essendon's bid. He had played junior football for East Fremantle and represented Western Australia at Under 16 and Under 18 levels. His twin brother, Chris, also plays football for East Fremantle. Azumah Nelson (born 19 July 1958) is a Ghanaian former professional boxer who competed from 1979 to 2008. He was a two-weight world champion, having held the WBC featherweight title from 1984 to 1987 and the WBC super-featherweight title twice between 1988 and 1997. He also challenged once for the unified WBC and IBF lightweight titles in 1990. At regional level he held the ABU, and Commonwealth featherweight titles between 1980 and 1982. The Western Bulldogs are a professional Australian rules football team that competes in the Australian Football League (AFL), the sport's premier competition. Mac Andrew (born 4 December 2003) is a professional Australian rules footballer playing for the Gold Coast Suns in the Australian Football League (AFL). Early life Andrew was born in Cairo, Egypt, to South Sudanese parents. In 2005, at 18 months of age, he moved to Australia with his family. He began playing Australian rules football for Wantirna South at the under-9s level and later played at Berwick, he also played basketball throughout his upbringing. James Borlase (born 18 July 2002) is an Australian rules footballer who plays for the Adelaide Crows in the Australian Football League (AFL). He was drafted by the Crows as a category B rookie in 2020 and made his AFL debut in 2023. Early life Borlase was born in Cairo, Egypt, while his father worked as a commodity trader abroad.
