Aurora Solar Thermal Power Project
Aurora Solar Thermal Power Project was a planned solar power tower solar thermal power plant to be located north of Port Augusta in South Australia. It was planned to generate 150 MW of electricity after it was completed in 2020. Storage capacity would have been up to 8 hours at full power. The facility was expected to produce 495 GWh of electricity annually. It was to be north of Port Augusta on Carriewerloo Station. On 5 April 2019, South Australian Energy Minister Dan van Holst Pellekaan announced the cancellation of the project. SolarReserve was a developer of utility-scale solar power projects which include Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Photovoltaic (PV) technology. The company has commercialized solar thermal energy storage technology that enables solar power tower CSP plants to deliver electricity day and night. In this technology, a molten salt is used to capture the energy from the sun and store it. Solar Power Tower
A solar power tower, also known as 'central tower' power plant or ' heliostat' power plant, is a type of solar furnace using a tower to receive focused sunlight. It uses an array of flat, movable mirrors (called heliostats) to focus the sun's rays upon a collector tower (the target). Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) systems are seen as one viable solution for renewable, pollution-free energy. Early designs used these focused rays to heat water, and used the resulting steam to power a turbine. Newer designs using liquid sodium have been demonstrated, and systems using molten salts (40% potassium nitrate, 60% sodium nitrate) as the working fluids are now in operation. Carriewerloo Station
Carriewerloo Station is a pastoral lease that operates as a sheep station in South Australia. It is situated approximately north of Iron Knob and west of Port Augusta. The property was established at some time prior to 1863 when it was owned by James Loudon. In 1865, the property was sold at auction. At this time it occupied an area of and was carrying 5,272 head of sheep. George Charles Hawker acquired the station in 1869 and spent much time and money in improving it. The Hawker brothers put Carriewerloo on the market in 1906 along with Parallana, Kolendoa and Moonaree Stations. At his time Carriewerloo occupied an area of of first class saltbush country.
