Ashley Goure
Ashley Goure (born July 6, 1990) is an athlete that participates in women's ice sledge hockey. A member of the Canada women's national ice sledge hockey team since 2006, she competed in the first-ever IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Women's International Cup in 2014. Playing career Born without tibia bones in her legs, her first exposure to ice sledge hockey came at a sporting demonstration in Sarnia back in 1998. Raised in Chatham, Ontario, the same area where Paralympic ice sledge hockey player Derek Whitson was raised, the two have also played together in numerous events. In addition to playing with the national women's team, Goure also competes on a team featuring both women and men in the Windsor, Ontario area known as the Windsor-Essex Ice Bullets. Defence (ice Hockey)
Defence or defense (in American English) in ice hockey is a player position that is primarily responsible for preventing the opposing team from scoring. They are often referred to as defencemen, D, D-men or blueliners (the latter a reference to the blue line in ice hockey which represents the boundary of the offensive zone; defencemen generally position themselves along the line to keep the puck in the zone). They were once called cover-point. In regular play, two defencemen complement three forwards and a goaltender on the ice. Ice Sledge Hockey
Sledge hockey, also known as Sled hockey in American English, and Para ice hockey in international competition, is an adaptation of ice hockey for players who have a physical disability. The sport was invented in the early 1960s at a rehabilitation centre in Stockholm, Sweden, and played under similar rules to standard ice hockey. Players are seated on sleds and use special hockey sticks with metal "teeth" on the tips of their handles to navigate the ice. Playing venues use an ice hockey rink. While sledge hockey is a part of the Winter Paralympics programme, it only includes a category for men which doubles as a mixed-sex division, allowing only a limited number of female athletes to participate. 2014 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Women's International Cup
The 2014 IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Women's International Cup was an international women's sledge hockey tournament and the first IPC Ice Sledge Hockey Women's International Cup in history. The event was held from November 7–9, 2014, in Brampton, Ontario, Brampton, Ontario, Canada. Three teams took part: the Canada women's national ice sledge hockey team, a unified team from Europe, and the United States women's national ice sledge hockey team. Canada Women's National Ice Sledge Hockey Team
The Canada women's national ice sledge hockey team is the national team representing Canada in women's international sledge hockey. The team competed at the IPC International Cup and now competes at the Para Ice Hockey Women's World Challenge. The team currently receives funding from the Hockey Canada Foundation through grants which enables it to run a grassroots development program. International Paralympic Committee
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC; german: Internationales Paralympisches Komitee) is an international non-profit organisation and the global governing body for the Paralympic Movement. Derek Whitson
Derek Whitson (born 21 June 1989) is a Canadian ice sledge hockey player. Whitson was born in Chatham, Ontario in 1989, with cerebral palsy. He joined the Canadian Sledge Hockey Team in 2007 after playing sledge hockey in the Windsor Ice Bullets sledge hockey program. He was a member of the Canadian sledge hockey team that won the silver medal at the 2009 World Sledge Hockey Challenge, as well as the one that competed in the 2010 Winter Paralympics. He was also a member of team who won the gold medal in the 2013 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championships in Korea. Whitson also is a player of football 7-a-side, in which he won a bronze medal at the 2007 Pan-American Games in Rio de Janeiro. He is also an avid golfer and artist, in which he has donated pieces of his art to art auctions in support of Canadian athletes. Christina Picton
Christina Picton (born April 6, 1993) is an athlete that participates in Nordic skiing and biathlon. She previously played women's ice sledge hockey. A member of the Canada women's national ice sledge hockey team since 2006. Picton served as the captain of the national team during the 2014–15 season. She started her Nordic ski and Biathlon career in 2018, which took her to the 2022 Paralympic Games. Career Having lost part of her right leg due to amputation, Picton began playing ice sledge hockey at the age of 11.
