Arts Council (Ireland)
The Arts Council (sometimes called the Arts Council of Ireland; legally ga, An Chomhairle Ealaíon) is the independent "Irish government agency for developing the arts." About It was established in 1951 by the Government of Ireland, to encourage interest in Irish art (including visual art, music, performance, and literature) and to channel funding from the state to Irish artists and arts organisations. This includes encouragement of traditional Irish arts, support for contemporary Irish arts, and finance for international arts events in Ireland. The council was modelled on the Arts Council of Great Britain, founded in 1946, and works closely with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, formed by the British government in Northern Ireland in 1962 to fulfil a similar role. Poetry Ireland ( ga, Éigse Éireann) is an organisation for poets and poetry, in both Irish and English, in the island of Ireland. It is a private nonprofit organisation that receives support from The Arts Council of Ireland and The Arts Council of Northern Ireland. It was founded in 1978 by John F. Deane and is based in Parnell Square, Dublin. Its thirtieth anniversary in 2008 was celebrated by events all over Ireland culminating in an event at the Irish College in Paris. The culture of Ireland includes language, literature, music, art, folklore, cuisine, and sport associated with Ireland and the Irish people. For most of its recorded history, Irish culture has been primarily Gaelic (see Gaelic Ireland). It has also been influenced by Anglo-Norman, English and Scottish culture. The Anglo-Normans invaded Ireland in the 12th century, and the 16th/17th century conquest and colonisation of Ireland saw the emergence of Tudor English culture repurposed in an Irish style. The Plantation of Ulster also introduced Scottish elements mostly confined to Northern Ireland. Brian Farrell (broadcaster)
Bernard Brendan "Brian" Farrell (9 January 1929 – 10 November 2014) was an Irish author, journalist, academic and broadcaster. He presented programmes such as ''Today Tonight'', and '' Prime Time'' on RTÉ. Early life Born in Manchester, England to Irish parents, Farrell moved to Dublin, Ireland during the Second World War. He was educated at Coláiste Mhuire, Dublin; University College Dublin and Harvard University. He married Marie-Thérèse Dillon in April 1955 while attending Harvard. Máire is the Irish language form of the Latin Maria, which was in turn a Latin form of the Greek names Μαριαμ, or Mariam, and Μαρια, or Maria, found in the New Testament. Both New Testament names were forms of the Hebrew name or Miryam English language name ''Mary''. It was and still is a popular name in Ireland, and is sometimes spelt in its Anglicised forms '' Maura'' and '' Moira''. Historically, ''Maol Muire'' (devotee of Mary) was the reverential form used by the Irish, just as ''Giolla Phádraig'' (servant of Pádraig) was the reverential usage for what subsequently became Pádraig. Pádraig de Brún (13 October 1889 – 5 June 1960), also called Patrick Joseph Monsignor Browne, was an Irish clergyman, mathematician, poet, and classical scholar, who served as President of University College, Galway (UCG). He was also known in friendly informal circles as Paddy Browne. Formation De Brún was born at Grangemockler, County Tipperary, in 1889, the son of a primary school teacher, Maurice Browne. Melatu Uche Okorie (born 1975) is a Nigerian-born Irish author and member of the Arts Council of Ireland. Her 2018 short story collection, ''This Hostel Life'', was shortlisted for the Sunday Independent Newcomer of the Year award at the Irish Book Awards, and adapted into an operatic work by the Irish National Opera. Early life and education Melatu Uche Okorie was born in 1975 in Enugu, Nigeria. She grew up in a household with her mother and several siblings, and obtained a degree in English before leaving Nigeria. Okorie moved to Ireland in 2006 with her infant daughter and lived in the direct provision system, which was when she began writing.
