Arthrolycosidae
Arthrolycosidae is an extinct family of arachnids, possibly spiders. Fossils placed in the family were found in the Carboniferous to Permian, . They were considered by Alexander Petrunkevitch to be "mesotheles", i.e. placed in the spider suborder Mesothelae. However, Paul A. Selden has stated they only have "the general appearance of spiders", with segmented abdomens (opisthosomae), but no definite spinnerets. At least some of the specimens placed in the family in the genus ''Arthrolycosa'' are considered to be spiders, whereas ''Eocteniza'' is "rather problematic as a spider". Mesothelae
The Mesothelae are a suborder of spiders (order Araneae) that includes a single extant family, Liphistiidae, and a number of extinct families. This suborder is thought to form the sister group to all other living spiders, and to retain ancestral characters, such as a segmented abdomen with spinnerets in the middle and two pairs of book lungs. Members of Liphistiidae are medium to large spiders with eight eyes grouped on a tubercle. They are found only in China, Japan, and southeast Asia. The oldest known Mesothelae spiders are known from the Carboniferous, over 300 million years ago. The Heptathelidae were once considered their own family; today they are considered a subfamily of the Liphistiidae. ''Eocteniza'' is an extinct genus of arachnids containing the sole species ''Eocteniza silvicola'', known from the Westphalian stage of the Carboniferous period in Coseley, England,, retrieved 21 March 2016 about . It was initially identified as a spider, but this is now doubted. Description The carapace (upper surface of the cephalothorax) is about 5 mm long by 4 mm wide. The abdomen is also about 5 mm long, slightly narrower at about 3.5 mm wide. The front end of the carapace is narrowed and raised, separated from the rest of the cephalothorax by shallow grooves, and bearing the eyes at the front. Pocock's description and drawing show in addition to the grooves separating the head from the rest of the thorax, three further pairs of radiating grooves, with the fovea towards the rear. Alexander Petrunkevitch
Alexander Ivanovitch Petrunkevitch ( Russian: Александр Иванович Петрункевич, December 22, 1875 in Plysky near Kyiv, now Ukraine – March 9, 1964 in New Haven) was an eminent Russian arachnologist of his time. From 1910 to 1939 he described over 130 spider species. One of his most famous essays was "The Spider and the Wasp." In it he uses effective word choices and some comic touch. Biography His aristocratic father, Ivan Illitch Petrunkevitch, was a liberal member of the First Duma and founded the Constitutional Democratic Party. After finishing his studies in Moscow and in Freiburg under August Weismann, Alexander settled in Yale in 1910, becoming a full professor in 1917. Opisthosoma
The opisthosoma is the posterior part of the body in some arthropods, behind the prosoma ( cephalothorax). It is a distinctive feature of the subphylum Chelicerata (arachnids, horseshoe crabs and others). Although it is similar in most respects to an abdomen (and is often referred to as such), the opisthosoma is differentiated by its inclusion of the respiratory organs ( book lungs or book gills) and the heart. Mazon Creek Fossil Beds
The Mazon Creek fossil beds are a conservation ' found near Morris, in Grundy County, Illinois. The fossils are preserved in ironstone concretions, formed approximately in the mid- Pennsylvanian epoch of the Carboniferous period. These concretions frequently preserve both hard and soft tissues of animal and plant materials, as well as many soft-bodied organisms that do not normally fossilize.
