Arnold Short
Arnold Short (October 3, 1932 – September 26, 2014) was an American basketball player. A 6'3 Guard (basketball), guard, he was an NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans, All-American college player at Oklahoma City University and a second round pick in the 1954 NBA draft. Short came to Oklahoma City from Weatherford High School (Oklahoma), Weatherford High School in Weatherford, Oklahoma. There he became the first basketball All-American in school history. As a senior in 1953–54, Short averaged 27.8 points per game, finishing fourth in the National Collegiate Athletic Association, NCAA scoring race. As a collegian, Short also played baseball and tennis. Following his college career, Short was drafted in the second round of the 1954 NBA draft by the Fort Wayne Pistons (13th overall). Phillips 66ers
The Phillips 66ers (also known as the Oilers) were an amateur basketball team located in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, and sponsored and run by the Phillips Petroleum Company. The 66ers were a national phenomenon that grew from a small-town team to an organization of accomplished amateur athletes receiving national and worldwide attention. Under the sponsorship of the company's owner, Frank Phillips, the team, which began playing in 1919, participated in the Amateur Athletic Union, the nation's premier basketball league before the National Basketball Association. Between 1920 and 1950, some of the strongest basketball teams in the United States were sponsored by corporations: Phillips 66, 20th Century Fox, Safeway Inc., Caterpillar Inc., and others. 1954 NBA Draft
The 1954 NBA draft was the eighth annual draft of the National Basketball Association (NBA). The draft was held on April 24, 1954, before the 1954–55 season. In this draft, nine NBA teams took turns selecting amateur U.S. college basketball players. In each round, the teams select in reverse order of their win–loss record in the previous season. The Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) is an amateur sports organization based in the United States. A multi-sport organization, the AAU is dedicated exclusively to the promotion and development of amateur sports and physical fitness programs. Tennis is a racket sport that is played either individually against a single opponent ( singles) or between two teams of two players each ( doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court.
