Archibald Kennedy, 11th Earl Of Cassilis
Captain Archibald Kennedy, 11th Earl of Cassilis (1720 – 30 December 1794) was a Scottish peer who lived in the English colony of New York which became part of the United States. Early life Kennedy, who lived in New York City at 1 Broadway in the Kennedy mansion, was the son of Archibald Kennedy (1685–1763) and Maria (née Walter) Schuyler Kennedy (1689–1764). He was born in 1720. His mother, a daughter of mayor Robert Walter and Catharine Leisler (a daughter of New York colonial governor Jacob Leisler, known for his role in Leisler's Rebellion), was briefly married, and widowed, to Arent Schuyler before her marriage to his father. His father, a direct descendant of the second son of Gilbert Kennedy, 3rd Earl of Cassilis, died in 1763. Career Having joined the Royal Navy, Kennedy passed his exam for the rank of lieutenant on 11 December 1744 and was promoted five days later. Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa KT, FRS (February 1770 – 8 September 1846), styled Lord Kennedy between 1792 and 1794 and known as the Earl of Cassilis between 1794 and 1831, was a Scottish peer. Early life Kennedy was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 11th Earl of Cassilis, by Anne, daughter of John Watts and descendant of the Schuyler family, the Van Cortlandt family (including Stephanus Van Cortlandt), and the Delancey family of British North America. He became known by the courtesy title Lord Kennedy when his father succeeded to the earldom of Cassilis in 1792. Career Kennedy succeeded to the earldom on the death of his father 30 December 1794. He sat in the House of Lords as a Scottish Representative Peer between 1796 and 1806. In the latter year he was created Baron Ailsa, of Ailsa in the County of Ayr, in the Peerage of the United Kingdom, which entitled him to an automatic seat in the House of Lords. Archibald Kennedy IV, Earl of Cassilis, (4 June 1794 – 12 August 1832) was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa. He was styled Lord Kennedy until 1831, and Earl of Cassilis thereafter until his death. He studied at the University of Saint Andrew under the tutorage of James Ferrie, Professor of Civil History. He married Eleanor Allardyce on 1 May 1814, and had one daughter and nine sons. Archibald Kennedy, 2nd Marquess of Ailsa, KT (25 August 1816 – 20 March 1870) was a Scottish peer and soldier. Life Born at Dunottar, he was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis, himself the oldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa, and his wife Eleanor, daughter of Alexander Allardyce. His father having predeceased him in 1832, Kennedy succeeded to his grandfather's titles in 1846. Eleanor as Marchioness was involved with Catharine Tait's ''Ladies Diocesan Association'' visiting the poor in the ''City Road Workhouse''. Kennedy served in the British Army as a lieutenant in the 17th Lancers (Duke of Cambridge's Own). Early life Archibald was born on 1 September 1847, the eldest of three sons born to Julia (née Jephson), Marchioness of Ailsa, and Archibald Kennedy, 2nd Marquess of Ailsa. Among his siblings was Maj Lord Alexander Kennedy, Lord John Kennedy, Lady Julia Alice Kennedy, Lady Evelyn Anne Kennedy, and Lady Constance Eleanor Kennedy. His father was the eldest son of Archibald Kennedy, Earl of Cassilis, himself the oldest son of Archibald Kennedy, 1st Marquess of Ailsa.
