Angelina Pwerle
Angelina Pwerle (pronounced 'Pull-uh') is an Australian Indigenous artist, born c. 1946 in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Her work is held by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Gallery of Australia and other institutions. Work Angelina Pwerle began working with batik in 1986 as part of the Utopia Women’s Batik Group, alongside Emily Kame Kngwarreye and others. She took up the medium of acrylic paint on canvas in the Australian summer of 1988-9. The work she has produced since 1989 can be divided into three main styles: abstract, naive and ritual. Her abstract paintings are composed of numerous tiny dots and can be described as pointillist works. Her naive paintings depict the Atham-areny spirit people. Her ritual work consists of woodcarvings that reflect her deep knowledge of ceremony. Pwerle's first solo exhibition took place at Niagara Galleries in Melbourne in 1996. Kathleen Ngale
Kathleen Ngale (alternative spellings include Kngale, Kngala, Kngal, Ngala etc.) is a senior Australian Aboriginal artist, born in the Utopia region of Central Australia. Kathleen Ngale belongs to the oldest living generation of Utopia artists and has been compared to Emily Kngwarreye, Minnie Pwerle, and Kathleen Petyarre. Life Kathleen Ngale was born around 1930 at the Camel Camp Station, 250 km north-East of Alice Springs, where she still lives with her extended family. She started working in Batik in 1979 and pursued her work in that medium until she, along with many other Aboriginal artists, was introduced in the late 1980s to painting in acrylic colours on canvas. Her work since then has come to be seen as some of the most sophisticated and complex in the Aboriginal art scene. Alyawarr
The Alyawarre, also spelt Alyawarr and also known as the Iliaura, are an Aboriginal Australian people, or language group, from the Northern Territory. The Alyawarre are made up of roughly 1,200 associated peoples and actively engage in local traditions such as awelye painting. Country Norman Tindale's estimate in 1974 assigned to the Alyawarre traditional tribal lands extending over some , taking in the Sandover and Bundey rivers, as well as Ooratippra, and Fraser creeks. Notable sites associated with their nomadic world include Mount Swan, northern flank of Harts Range, Plenty River north and west of Ilbala, Jervois Range, Mount Playford and the Elkedra River.
