American Islamic Congress
Founded late in 2001, the American Islamic Congress (AIC) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization based in the United States. AIC is a non-religious, civil rights organization whose stated goal is to build interfaith and inter-ethnic understanding. It receives significant funding from the U.S. government. History AIC was founded in November 2001 by a group of American Muslims to promote tolerance following the September 11, 2001 attacks. AIC's co-founder, Zainab Al-Suwaij, was a prominent public supporter of the 2003 U.S. war with Iraq. In 2004, AIC was one of three groups who shared a $10 million U.S. Department of State grant to carry out democracy training of Iraqi women. Zainab Al-Suwaij
Zainab Al-Suwaij (Arabic: زينب السويج)(b. 1971) is an Iraqi American activist and the co-founder and executive director of the American Islamic Congress. She advocates for women's equality, civil and religious rights, and interfaith understanding. Biography Suwaij was born in Basrah in 1971 and was raised in the home of her grandfather, the Ayatollah of Basra. In 1991, she participated in the guerilla uprising against Sadam Hussein. Shortly after the uprising she fled Iraq and came to the United States. She became a United States citizen in 1996. Career After arriving in the United States, Suwaij taught Arabic at Yale University and worked resettling Sudanese refugees in the United States. Haleh Esfandiari ( fa, هاله اسفندیاری) (born March 3, 1940) is an Iranian-American academic and former Director of the Middle East Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C.
