The American Go Association (AGA) was founded in 1935, to promote the board game of Go in the United States. Founded by chess master Edward Lasker and some friends at Chumley's restaurant in New York City, the AGA is one of the oldest Western Go associations. European Go Federation
The European Go Federation (EGF) is a non-profit organization with the purpose of encouraging, regulating, co-ordinating, and disseminating the playing of the board game Go in Europe. The EGF was founded in 1957, the same year that the inaugural European Go Congress (EGC) took place in Cuxhaven, Germany. The Congress has been an annual event every year since then, held each time in a different European city. The European Go Championship takes place during the EGC, as well as the Annual General Meeting (AGM). In 2014, the European Professional System was established by the European Go Federation. Membership is open to any Go-organising association in a country in or near Europe. There are currently 35 full members, and two suspended members. Taiwan Chi-Yuan
The Taiwan Chi Yuan Culture Foundation ( Chinese: 台灣棋院文化基金會 Pinyin:Táiwān Qíyuàn Wénhuà Jījīnhuì ), also known as the Taiwan Chi Yuan or Taiwan Go Association, is a professional Go association in Taiwan. The Taiwan Qiyuan was created on March 4, 2000 with initial funding provided by Mr. Weng Ming Xian ( Chinese:翁明顯 Pinyin: Wēng Míng Xiǎn) who also served as the first chairman of the association. The chairman is Chen Guoxing. It ranks professionals and runs professional qualification exams for players in Taiwan. Hanguk Kiwon
The Korea Baduk Association, also known as Hanguk Kiwon (), was founded in November 1945 by Cho Namchul. Baduk is a game which was present in Korea by the 5th century. It originated in China, but the West is more familiar with the Japanese name Go. This is because the Japanese were the first to introduce it to the West. Japan was introduced to the game in the 7th century AD. Initially, most Korean players followed the sunjang style of beginning by placing sixteen stones —eight white and eight black— on the board in a preset pattern. Cho Namchul knew that the international players began with an empty board like Japan since Japan was the first to introduce the game to the West. By forming the association, he set about convincing Koreans players to use the "modern" style. The Hanguk Kiwon is the Go organization that oversees Go professionals in South Korea. Nihon Ki-in
The Nihon Ki-in (), also known as the Japan Go Association, is the main organizational body for Go in Japan, overseeing Japan's professional system and issuing diplomas for amateur dan rankings. It is based in Tokyo. The other major Go association in Japan is Kansai Ki-in. Its innovations include the Oteai system of promotion, time limits in professional games, and the introduction of issuing diplomas to strong amateur players, to affirm their ranks. History The Nihon Ki-in was established in July 1924. The first president of the Nihon Ki-in was Makino Nobuaki, a great Go patron himself, with Okura Kishichiro serving as vice president. This is a list of professional Go tournaments, for competitors in the board game of ''Go''. The tradition, initiated by the Honinbo Tournament in Japan, is for an event to be run annually, leading up to a title match and the award of a title for one year to the winner. Tournaments do not consist, generally, of players coming together in one place for a short period, but are spread out over time. Pandanet (originally and sometimes called IGS, short for Internet Go Server), located in Tokyo, Japan, is a server that allows players of the game of Go to observe and play against others over the Internet. Started February 2, 1992, by Tim Casey, Chris Chisolm, and Mark Okada, working out of the University of New Mexico, and until April 5, 1993, continued at the University of California, Berkeley, and UC San Francisco (with an additional server at The Pasteur Institute, France), it was the first server of its kind. After its initial inception some of its members helped to improve the server by writing software with a graphical interface; and thus IGS was born. Tygem ( ko, 타이젬바둑) is an internet go server owned by South Korean company TongYang Online. Popular in Asia, their website states that over 500 professional Go players use their service. Tygem was founded as ICBL by Cho Hun-hyun in 2000, and renamed to Tygem in 2001, invested by Tongyang Group and JoongAng Ilbo. In October 2015, AlphaGo from DeepMind beat the European Go champion Fan Hui Fan Hui (; born 27 December 1981) is a Chinese-born French Go player.
