Alpine Independent School District
The Alpine Independent School District is a school district based in Alpine, Texas, United States. The district operates one high school, Alpine High School. History Prior to 1996 Alpine High School served as the high school for students from Terlingua Common School District. Beginning in the 1960s, students were bussed to Alpine, with the bus ride being the longest in the United States. San Vicente Independent School District also sent its high school students to Alpine High. In 1996 Big Bend High School opened and the Terlingua area students no longer came to Alpine High. San Vicente ISD at that time began using Big Bend High. Finances As of the 2010-2011 school year, the appraised valuation of property in the district was $380,110,000. The maintenance tax rate was $0.117 and the bond tax rate was $0.009 per $100 of appraised valuation. Howard Payne University Press
Howard Payne University is a private Baptist university in Brownwood, Texas. It is affiliated with the Baptist General Convention of Texas. Howard Payne College was founded by Reverend Noah T. Byers and Dr. John David Robnett in 1889. The institution is named for its first major benefactor, Edward Howard Payne, who was the brother-in-law of Robnett. Athletic programs include NCAA Division III football, baseball, softball, women's volleyball, men and women's soccer, basketball and tennis. The HPU mascot is a yellow jacket named "Buzzsaw". The university also has extension centers located in New Braunfels, Texas and in El Paso, Texas. Big Bend National Park
Big Bend National Park is an American national park located in West Texas, bordering Mexico. The park has national significance as the largest protected area of Chihuahuan Desert topography and ecology in the United States, and was named after a large bend in the Rio Grande/Río Bravo. The park protects more than 1,200 species of plants, more than 450 species of birds, 56 species of reptiles, and 75 species of mammals. Terlingua, Texas
Terlingua ( ) is a mining district and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican state of Chihuahua. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people. The only remnants of the mining days are a ghost town of the Howard Perry-owned Chisos Mining Company and several nearby capped and abandoned mines, most notably the California Hill, the Rainbow, the 248, and the Study Butte mines. The mineral terlinguaite was first found in the vicinity of California Hill. The population of Terlingua as of 2020 was 78. Lajitas, Texas
Lajitas is an unincorporated community in Brewster County, Texas, United States, near the Big Bend National Park. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 75 in 2010. History The settlement is named after the Boquillas flagstone found in the area. "''Lajitas''" translates to "little flat rocks" in Spanish. It was inhabited by aboriginal Mexicans for many years. They were then removed from the area by the Apache and Comanche tribes in the 18th and 19th centuries. The first white settlers came to the area in the mid-1800s. William H. Emory also visited Lajitas in 1852. The community boomed when quicksilver was discovered 11 miles from the community at the end of the decade. Sul Ross State University (SRSU) is a public university in Alpine, Texas. The main campus is the primary institution of higher education serving the nineteen-county Big Bend region of far West Texas. Big Bend High School
Big Bend High School is a public K-12 school located in unincorporated Brewster County, Texas (USA), adjacent to the Study Butte census-designated place, and with a Terlingua postal address. Originally a high school, it now serves as the only school in the Terlingua Common School District and is classified as a 1A school by the UIL.
