Alister Clark
Alister Clark (1864–1949) was the best known and most influential Australian rose breeder. His roses were the most widely planted in Australia between the World Wars and made an enduring difference to the appearance of Australian cities. His experiments hybridising ''Rosa gigantea'' were in world class and have never been surpassed. Biography Alister Clark was the son of an immigrant Scottish tenant farmer who did well in Australia, leaving his family with several outback cattle stations, as well as "Glenara", a big property in a valley at Bulla, Victoria, Bulla, north of Melbourne. Clarke and his siblings received a genteel upbringing and knew Europe well: Clark was educated at Loretto School in Scotland and at Jesus College, Cambridge. Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden
The Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden is the most complete collection in Australia of the surviving roses of "the great Australian rose breeder, Alister Clark" (1864–1949). It is situated near "Glenara", his old house and garden in Bulla, Victoria, 10 km NW of Melbourne Airport. There are at least 150 named roses by Alister Clark and many more plausibly attributed to him. Of these 83 are known to survive, though the authenticity of some is disputed and another eight only survive outside Australia. St Kilda Botanic Gardens
St Kilda Botanical Gardens are a botanical garden located in the suburb St Kilda, Victoria, Australia. Located on the former site of a gravel pit and rubbish dump, they were formally gazetted on 28 September 1859 and opened in 1861. In October 2010 City of Port Phillip provided funds for the design of four distinctive new gates, to celebrate the gardens' 150th anniversary. The gates were installed on Tennyson, Dickens and Herbert Streets. They were designed and sculpted by designer/blacksmith David Wood of Bent Metal. In 1948 the Alister Clark Memorial Rose Garden was opened; in 1985 it was redesigned in its current style. At one time the Alister Clark garden contained a large selection of roses bred by him, but only a few remain, crowded out by David Austin ones. Susan Irvine
Susan Irvine (1928–2019) was an Australian educator, author and rose authority. Family and education Susan Irvine (pronounced ''Ervin'') was born in Dalby, Queensland in 1928. She was the second of three daughters of John Moore and Niree Hunter (b. 1897, m. 1923). Her self-supporting mother ran a full-time and wide-ranging business called Arts and Antiques. At the same time her mother was socially and geographically prominent, her house Lynfield overlooking Toowoomba from The Range. Susan, like her sisters, boarded at The Glennie School – down the street from Lynfield – from the age of four till the age of 17 and "absolutely hated" it. Straight after the Second World War Susan began a music degree in voice and cello at the University of Melbourne, married at 19 a Sydney radiologist ten years older, Peter Tod, and moved to Sydney. Descanso Gardens is a botanical garden located in La Cañada Flintridge, Los Angeles County, California. Descanso gardens features a wide area, mostly forested, with artificial streams, ponds, and lawns. Europa-Rosarium
The Europa-Rosarium, formerly the Rosarium Sangerhausen, is a municipal rose garden located in Sangerhausen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany. With 8300 cultivars and species it is one of the largest rose collection in the world, playing an important role as budwood source and in research. In 2003 it was granted the Award of Garden Excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies. It is open daily in the warmer months and charges an admission fee. Today the garden contains about 75,000 rose bushes representing over 6,300 different rose cultivars, and describes itself as the most comprehensive rose collection in the world, with a Wild Rose collection containing more than 500 species of rare trees and shrubs. Monserrate Palace
The Monserrate Palace ( pt, Palácio de Monserrate) is a palatial villa located near Sintra, the traditional summer resort of the Portuguese court in the foothills overlooking the Atlantic Ocean north of the capital, Lisbon. History According to legend, there was a chapel dedicated to Virgin Mary built by Afonso Henriques after the reconquest of Sintra (circa 1093). On its ruins another chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Monserrate was constructed on the top of the hill in 1540. The estate was then owned by Hospital Real de Todos os Santos, Lisbon. The Adelaide Botanic Garden is a public garden at the north-east corner of the Adelaide city centre, in the Adelaide Park Lands.
