Alfred Cove, Western Australia
Alfred Cove is a southern suburb of Perth, Western Australia. Its local government area is the City of Melville. History It is named after the adjacent sheltered cove in the Swan River, which is in turn named after Alfred Waylen who was born at Point Walter in 1833 and who was granted Swan Location 74, covering most of present-day Alfred Cove and Myaree. The suburb contains Tompkins Park, Bill Sweet Park and Sid Eaton Reserve. As of 2016, Alfred Cove had a population of 2,550. Wildlife The suburb is home to a variety of migrant and native species of birds and animals as the hinterland offers a comfortable habitat including the mudflats, seagrass beds and intertidal vegetation. Some of the migratory wading birds come from as far as Siberia, Mongolia and Asia and many of these species are protected under international agreements. The Swan River () is a river in the south west of Western Australia. The river runs through the metropolitan area of Perth, Western Australia's capital and largest city. Course of river The Swan River estuary flows through the city of Perth. Its lower reaches are relatively wide and deep, with few constrictions, while the upper reaches are usually quite narrow and shallow. The Swan River drains the Avon and coastal plain catchments, which have a total area of about . It has three major tributaries, the Avon River, Canning River and Helena River. The latter two have dams (Canning Dam and Mundaring Weir) which provide a sizeable part of the potable water requirements for Perth and the regions surrounding. Alfred Cove was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia. It was located in Perth's southern suburbs, and named after the riverside suburb of Alfred Cove. History Alfred Cove was created at the 1994 redistribution, created out of the northern riverside portions of the former seats of Applecross and part of Melville, and was first contested in the 1996 election at which Liberal member and Court government minister Doug Shave, who had previously represented Melville since the 1989 election, was successful. Point Walter (Noongar: ''Dyoondalup'') is a point on the Swan River, Western Australia, notable for its large sandbar that extends into the river. It is located on the southern shore of Melville Water, and forms its western end. Point Walter is located in the suburb of Bicton, approximately south of the Perth central business district, and north-east of Fremantle, and is on the opposite side of the river to the suburbs of Mosman Park, Peppermint Grove, and Dalkeith. Point Walter is a site of Aboriginal Australian heritage, both for its place in the Dreamtime and because of the local Whadjuk people's historical activities at the site. Alfred Waylen
Alfred Robert Waylen (1833 – 10 January 1901) was a colonial surgeon in Western Australia and a winemaker. Waylen was born at Point Walter, Western Australia, son of Alfred Waylen and his wife, ''née'' Bailey. A. R. Waylen qualified as M.R.C.S. Eng., L.S.A. (London), and L.Mid.R.C.S. Eng. in 1856. He entered the colonial service in April 1859 as medical officer Swan District, and was for sixteen years in the Imperial medical service in charge of the Guildford convict depot and out-stations. He was appointed colonial surgeon in August 1873, medical officer of Perth prison in 1876, and was also president of the Medical Board and of the Central Board of Health. Dr. Waylen, who was an M.D. of Melbourne and a J. P. of Western Australia, and was a member of the Perth Commission for the Colonial and Indian Exhibition, visited England in 1890. City Of Melville
The City of Melville is a local government area in the southern suburbs of the Western Australian capital city of Perth, east of the port city of Fremantle and about south of Perth's central business district. The City covers an area of and had a population of about 98,000 as at the 2016 Census. History Melville was originally established on 14 December 1900 as the East Fremantle Road District under the ''Roads Boards Act 1871''. Ardross is a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, located within the City of Melville. It was once an area of land acquired by the Scotsman, Sir Alexander Percival Matheson in 1896.
