Alexander Abela
Alexander Abela (born 30 November 1964), is a British-French filmmaker, producer and writer. He is best known for directing the live action films ''Makibefo'', ''Souli'' and the animation film ''Zarafa''. Personal life He was born on 30 November 1964 in Coventry, England. Career He studied physics and oceanography extensive with an ambition to be an oceanographer. He is a seasoned freediver and trained as a commercial diver (HSE Part I) as well. But in 1997, he began a film career instead of that. In 2001, he directed his maiden film ''Makibefo'', where he was also the producer and writer. The film has been shot in Madagascar in October 1998. Indigenous peoples are culturally distinct ethnic groups whose members are directly descended from the earliest known inhabitants of a particular geographic region and, to some extent, maintain the language and culture of those original peoples. Antandroy
The Tandroy are a traditionally nomadic ethnic group of Madagascar inhabiting the arid southern part of the island called Androy, tracing their origins back to the East Africa mainland. In the 17th century however, the Tandroy emerged as a confederation of two groups ruled by the Zafimanara dynasty until flooding caused the kingdom to disband around 1790. The difficult terrain and climate of Tandroy protected and isolated the population, sparing them from subjugation by the Kingdom of Imerina in the 19th century; later, the French colonial authority also struggled to exert its influence over this population. Since independence the Tandroy have suffered prejudice and economic marginalization, prompting widespread migration and intermarriage with other ethnic groups, and leading them to play a key role in protests that sparked the end of President Philibert Tsiranana's administration in 1972. Makibefo
''Makibefo'' is a 1999 Malagasy black-and-white drama film written and directed by Alexander Abela. The director filmed the movie near the town of Faux Cap, Madagascar, with a single technical assistant. With the exception of an English-speaking narrator, all the roles are played by indigenous Antandroy people (few of whom had ever seen a movie before) who performed a largely improvised story based on William Shakespeare's ''Macbeth'' set in a remote fishing village. Plot Two Antandroy men, Makibefo and Bakoua, encounter a witch doctor as they escort a prisoner across the desert back to their village. The witch doctor prophesizes a series of future events, including Makibefo's role as the destined king of his people. On their return to the village, Makibefo sees the witch doctor's prophecies begin to come true. He shares the prophecies with his wife, and she goads him into killing their king, Danikany. ''Souli'' is a 2004 Malagasy drama film written and directed by Alexander Abela and based on William Shakespeare's '' Othello''. It follows Abela's 1999 film '' Makibefo'', an adaptation of '' Macbeth''. Plot Carlos (based on Shakespeare's Cassio) is a young Spanish student searching for the renowned Senegalese poet Souli, who may be the last griot to possess the "Thiossan tale". Souli, based on Othello, is working as a fisherman and living with a young French woman Mona (based on Desdemona).
