Albert Torres (salsa Promoter)
Albert Torres (June 14, 1956 – May 25, 2017) was an international salsa dance promoter from Los Angeles. He is known for being the organizer of the LA Salsa Fest, the longest running salsa congress in the US, as well as one of the organizers of the World Salsa Championships and later the World Latin Dance Cup. Albert Torres had a number of minor film appearances in which he typically played the role of a dancer, including The Mambo Kings, Dance With Me, and Out to Sea. Salsa is a latin dance, associated with the music genre of the same name, which was first popularized in the United States in the 1960s in New York City. Salsa is an amalgamation of Cuban dances, such as mambo, pachanga and rumba, as well as American dances such as swing and tap. Origin Salsa dancing — as a dance to accompany salsa music — was popularized in the 1960s. It was primarily developed by Puerto Ricans and Cubans living in New York in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Salsa Congress
A Salsa congress is a multi-day dance festival featuring workshops, social dancing, performances and competitions focusing on Salsa dancing. The format was first pioneered at the Puerto Rico Salsa Congress in 1997. Since then salsa congresses have become popular in almost every country, including different cities in the US, all over Europe, parts of Asia, and countries in Latin America and Africa. There are many events that follow a similar format to salsa congresses, but go by other names such as "Salsa Festival" or "Salsa Summit". The Mambo Kings
''The Mambo Kings'' is a 1992 musical drama film based on the 1989 Pulitzer Prize-winning novel ''The Mambo Kings Play Songs of Love'' by Oscar Hijuelos. The film was directed and produced by Arne Glimcher, and stars Armand Assante, Antonio Banderas, Cathy Moriarty and Maruschka Detmers. Set in the early 1950s, the story follows Cesar (Assante) and Nestor Castillo (Banderas), brothers and aspiring musicians who find success and stardom after fleeing from Havana, Cuba to New York City to escape danger. The film marks Glimcher's directing debut, and features Banderas in his first English-language role. ''The Keenen Ivory Wayans Show'' is a late night syndicated television talk show hosted by Keenen Ivory Wayans. The show premiered August 4, 1997, and was cancelled in March 1998. The show had an opening monologue and comedy sketches. His in-house band was an all-female band called Ladies of the Night. In many markets, the show was compared with and competed against the talk show ''Vibe'', which launched at the same time. The two shows would poke fun of each other on occasion. Guests who appeared on the show include Rick James, Jada Pinkett Smith, Samuel L.
