Agusan del Sur, officially the Province of Agusan del Sur ( ceb, Habagatang Agusan; Butuanon: ''Probinsya hong Agusan del Sur''; tl, Timog Agusan), is a province in Caraga region, Mindanao, Philippines. Its capital is the municipality of Prosperidad. It is bordered on the northwest by Agusan del Norte and Misamis Oriental; east by Surigao del Sur; southeast by Davao Oriental; mid-south by Davao de Oro; southwest by Davao del Norte and, mid-west by Bukidnon. It is the fourth largest province in the country in terms of area. Etymology Agusan derives its name from the Agusan word ''agasan'', meaning "where the water flows", referring to the Agusan River that splits the land and meanders south to north in a rush to Butuan Bay. Prosperidad, officially the Municipality of Prosperidad ( ceb, Lungsod sa Prosperidad; tgl, Bayan ng Prosperidad), is a 1st class municipality and capital of the province of Agusan del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 88,321 people. Prosperidad was created on June 18, 1960, through '' Republic Act No. 2650''. Prosperidad is the venue of the Naliyagan Festival, an annual event celebrated by the entire province of Agusan del Sur. Bayugan, officially the City of Bayugan ( ceb, Dakbayan sa Bayugan; fil, Lungsod ng Bayugan), is a 5th class component city in the province of Agusan del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 109,499 people.. Gained cityhood through Republic Act No. 9405, it is the only city in the province of Agusan del Sur. Located at the northern part of Agusan del Sur, Bayugan is the "cut-flower capital" of the province owing to its lucrative cut flower industry. Esperanza, officially the Municipality of Esperanza ( ceb, Lungsod sa Esperanza; tgl, Bayan ng Esperanza), is a 1st class municipality in the province of Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Veruela, officially the Municipality of Veruela ( ceb, Lungsod sa Veruela; tgl, Bayan ng Veruela), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Agusan del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 39,708 people. History Veruela is considered the oldest town of upper Agusan del Sur. It was believed the name "Veruela" was derived from the word "virus", as the entire area was suffering from smallpox and cholera in the late 18th century when the Spanish missionaries encountered the tribe. Talacogon, officially the Municipality of Talacogon ( ceb, Lungsod sa Talacogon; tgl, Bayan ng Talacogon), is a 2nd class municipality in the province of Agusan del Sur, Philippines. According to the 2020 census, it has a population of 39,678 people. History Talacogon got its name from the cogon grass that is abundant in the area. It was called so by the natives who inhabit the area before the entry of the Spanish in the Agusan River basin sometime in the 18th century. The Spanish who came in the area then adopted the name of the place as they founded it as a town in the 13th of November 1872, building a church and a town hall as commemoration to its founding.
