Disco is a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States' urban nightlife scene. Symmetry (band)
Symmetry is an American instrumental musical duo consisting of Johnny Jewel and Nat Walker of Chromatics. In late 2010 Jewel was asked by director Nicolas Winding Refn and lead actor Ryan Gosling to score the film ''Drive''. He collaborated with Walker, but their material was ultimately not used. However the film soundtrack did include previously released music from Chromatics and Desire, both on Jewel's Italians Do It Better label. Jewel and Walker then formed Symmetry and further reworked and expanded on the original tracks, ending up with nine hours of music, two hours of which were released as an LP entitled "''Themes For An Imaginary Film''" in 2011. In 2011, they also released a promotional LP entitled ''The Messenger'', in a limited edition of 1,500 copies on clear vinyl. Appaloosa (band)
Appaloosa is a band composed of lyricist/vocalist Anne-Laure Keib and musician Max Krefeld. The pair met when Anne-Laure left her native Paris to spend time in Berlin, and together they formed Appaloosa there in June 2006. Keib writes the lyrics and serves as the band's vocalist and front-woman. Krefeld writes the music which frequently involves programming and the use of synthesizers. Appaloosa's song, "The Day (We Fell in Love)" appeared on ''Kitsuné Maison Compilation 6'', released by Kitsuné Music in October 2008. In the latter part of 2008, Keib's longtime friend and former roommate Chan Marshall invited Appaloosa to support Cat Power on a US tour. Chromatics (band)
Chromatics were an American electronic music band from Portland, Oregon, who formed in 2001. The band's final line-up consisted of Ruth Radelet (vocals, guitar, synthesizer), Adam Miller (guitar, vocoder), Nat Walker (drums, synthesizer), and Johnny Jewel (producer, multi-instrumentalist). The band originally featured a trademark sound indebted to punk and lo-fi that was described as "noisy" and "chaotic". After numerous lineup changes, which left guitarist Adam Miller as the sole original member, the band began releasing material on the Italians Do It Better record label in 2007, with their style streamlined into an Italo disco-influenced sound. Desire is a Canadian electronic music band from Montreal, formed in 2009. The band consists of vocalist Megan Louise and producer Johnny Jewel (a former member of Chromatics and Glass Candy). Formerly, Nat Walker (also a former member of Chromatics) is also on the band on synthesizer and drums. Their debut studio album, ''II'', was released on June 30, 2009 on the Italians Do It Better label. Their lyrics are in French and English. Glass Candy is an American electronic music duo from Portland, Oregon, formed in 1996 by vocalist Ida No and producer and multi-instrumentalist Johnny Jewel. The band is part of the Italians Do It Better label. While the band's early work blends elements of no wave, art punk, and glam rock, their later work incorporates synth-pop and Italo disco. Out Of Left Field
"Out of left field" is American slang meaning "unexpected", "odd" or "strange". The phrase came from baseball terminology, referring to a play in which the ball is thrown from the area covered by the left fielder to either home plate or first base, surprising the runner. Variations include "out in left field" and simply "left field". According to the Major League Baseball website the term means "crazy." Cook County Hospital (by the West Side Grounds, the Chicago Cubs first location under what is now the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine) had a mental institution behind left field, and "patients could be heard yelling and screaming things at fans behind the left field wall."
