Afidnes
Afidnes ( el, Αφίδνες, or Ἀφίδναι, from the Middle Ages until 1919: Κιούρκα - ''Kiourka'') is a small town in East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Oropos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 34.638 km2. It is situated in the eastern foothills of the Parnitha mountains, 3 km southwest of Polydendri, 5 km southeast of Malakasa and 27 km north of Athens city centre. Afidnes has a station on the railway from Athens to Thessaloniki. The Motorway 1 (Athens - Lamia - Thessaloniki) passes east of the town. It is part of Athens metropolitan area. Ancient Aphidna was one of the twelve ancient towns of Attica. In Greek mythology, Aphidna was the place where Theseus left Helen after he had abducted her. Afidnes Railway Station
Afidnes railway station ( el, Σιδηροδρομικός Σταθμός Αφιδνών, ''Sidirodromikos Stathmos Afidnon'') is a station on the Piraeus–Platy railway line in Afidnes, in the northern part of the Athens urban area, in the municipality of Oropos, Greece. It was inaugurated on 8 March 1904, and reopened on 6 May 2005. It is owned by OSE, but service are provided by TrainOSE, through the Athens Suburban Railway from Athens to Chalcis. The station was featured in a 1974 episode of the YENED Greek soap opera Border Station (Μεθοριακός Σταθμός). History The Station opened on 8 March 1904, as Kiourka railway station ( el, Σιδηροδρομικός σταθμός Κιούρκα, Sidirodromikós stathmós Kiourka), in what was then the Central Greece on what was a branch line of the Piraeus, Demerli & Frontiers Railway. Callimachus (polemarch)
Callimachus ( el, Καλλίμαχος ''Kallímakhos'') was the Athenian polemarch at the Battle of Marathon, which took place during 490 BC. According to Herodotus he was from the Attica deme of Afidnes. The Battle of Marathon As polemarch, Callimachus had a vote in military affairs along with the 10 ''strategos, strategoi'', including Miltiades the Younger, Miltiades. Miltiades convinced Callimachus to vote in favour of a battle when the ''strategoi'' were split evenly on the matter. Miltiades is supposed to have said to Callimachus just before the polemarch cast his vote: “Everything now rests on you.” During the battle, as polemarch, Callimachus commanded the right wing of the Athenian army as was the Athenian custom at that time. Polydendri
Polydendri (Greek language, Greek: Πολυδένδρι, English language, English: "Many trees") is a town and former Communities and Municipalities of Greece, community of East Attica, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Oropos, of which it is a municipal unit. It is part of Athens metropolitan area. Polydendri has historically been an Arvanite settlement. Geography It is located north of Athens. Polydendri is at an altitude of 340 meters. Arvanite
Arvanites (; Arvanitika: , or , ; Greek: , ) are a bilingual population group in Greece of Albanian origin. They traditionally speak Arvanitika, an Albanian language variety, along with Greek. Their ancestors were first recorded as settlers who came to what is today southern Greece in the late 13th and early 14th century. They were the dominant population element in parts of the Peloponnese, Attica and Boeotia until the 19th century.Trudgill (2000: 255). They call themselves Arvanites (in Greek) and Arbëror (in their language). Kapandriti ( el, Καπανδρίτι) is a town in the north of East Attica in Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Oropos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 36.789 km2. It is part of Athens metropolitan area. Kapandriti is situated east of the Parnitha mountains and north of the Marathon Reservoir. It is 10 km northwest of Marathon and 29 km northeast of Athens city center. Motorway 1 (Athens - Thessaloniki) passes west of the town. Aphidna
Aphidna ( grc, Ἄφιδνα) or Aphidnae or Aphidnai (Ἀφίδναι) was one of the twelve ancient towns of ancient Attica. It was celebrated in the mythical period as the place where Theseus deposited Helen of Troy, entrusting her to the care of his friend Aphidnus. When the Dioscuri invaded Attica in search of their sister, the inhabitants of Deceleia informed the Lacedaemonians where Helen was concealed, and showed them the way to Aphidna. The Dioscuri thereupon took the town, and carried off their sister. We learn, from a decree quoted by Demosthenes, that Aphidna was, in his time, a fortified town, and at a greater distance than 120 stadia from Athens. Motorway 1 (code: A1, also known as Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzonoi (A.TH.E.) Motorway, and previously as Patras-Athens-Thessaloniki-Evzonoi (P.A.TH.E.) Acharnes
Acharnes ( el, Αχαρνές, , before 1915: Μενίδι Menidi, ) is a northwestern suburb of Athens, Attica, Greece. With 106,943 inhabitants (2011 census), it is the most populous municipality in East Attica. It is part of the Athens Urban area. Geography The northern part of the municipality is covered by the forested Parnitha mountain. The southern part is in the plain of Athens, and is densely populated. Malakasa ( el, Μαλακάσα) is a village and former community of East Attica in Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Oropos, of which it is a municipal unit. The municipal unit has an area of 10.450 km2. The municipal unit Malakasa consists of the villages Malakasa (pop. 514 in 2011), Milesi (425) and Sfendali (110). Malakasa is situated on the northern edge of the Parnitha mountain range and 9 km south of the South Euboean Gulf coast. It is 29 km north of Athens city center.
