Bernice Surprise Summerfield (later Professor Bernice Summerfield or just Benny) is a fictional character created by author Paul Cornell as a new companion of the Seventh Doctor in Virgin Publishing's range of original full-length '' Doctor Who'' novels, the '' New Adventures''. The ''New Adventures'' were authorised novels carrying on from where the ''Doctor Who'' television series had left off, and Summerfield was introduced in Cornell's novel '' Love and War'' in 1992. ''Walking to Babylon'' is a 1998 novel by Kate Orman in the Virgin New Adventures series featuring the fictional archaeologist Bernice Summerfield (known as Benny). The New Adventures were a spin-off from the long-running British science fiction television series ''Doctor Who'', but after the publisher Virgin Books lost the license to do ''Doctor Who'' stories from the BBC, the New Adventures continued, centred on the character of Benny and further characters and settings created for the series. ''Walking to Babylon'' is the tenth Benny-led New Adventure. Orman had previously written several ''Doctor Who'' New Adventures, but this was her first for the post-''Doctor Who'' series. As characterises her work, the novel mixes hard science fiction with strong characters. Irving Braxiatel
Irving Braxiatel or Cardinal Braxiatel is a fictional character from the Virgin New Adventures—spin-off novels based on the BBC science fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. He subsequently became a regular character in novels and audio dramas in the ''Bernice Summerfield'' series. In the Big Finish Productions audio dramas he is voiced by Miles Richardson. He is also stated to be the older brother of the Doctor. Nicholas Briggs
Nicholas Briggs (born 29 September 1961) is an English actor, writer, director, sound designer and composer. He is associated with the BBC science fiction television series '' Doctor Who'' and its spin-offs, particularly as the voice of the Daleks and the Cybermen in the 21st century series. He is also the executive producer of Big Finish Productions, for which he has produced, directed and written several audio plays, as well as acting in many of them. The ''Virgin New Adventures'' (NA series, or NAs) are a series of novels from Virgin Publishing based on the British science-fiction television series ''Doctor Who''. They continued the story of the Doctor from the point at which the television programme went into hiatus from television in 1989. From 1991 to 1997, all the books except the final one involved the Seventh Doctor, who was portrayed on television by Sylvester McCoy; the final book, ''The Dying Days'', involved the Eighth Doctor, who was portrayed in the 1996 television film by Paul McGann.
