Sport at the University of Adelaide is primarily organised by the Adelaide University Sports Association. Other bodies affiliated to the University of Adelaide providing sport include the various sports clubs forming part of the residential colleges and the Roseworthy Agricultural Campus Student Union Council. The University of Adelaide (informally Adelaide University) is a public research university located in Adelaide, South Australia. Established in 1874, it is the third-oldest university in Australia. Robert Barr Smith
Robert Barr Smith (4 February 1824 – 20 November 1915) was an Australian businessman and philanthropist in Adelaide, South Australia. He was a partner in Elder Smith and Company from 1863 (now now Elders Limited). Early life and education Smith was born at Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, Scotland, the son of the Rev. Dr Robert Smith, a Church of Scotland minister, and his wife Marjory, ''née'' Barr. He studied for a time at the University of Glasgow. Career Barr Smith went into business after university and afterwards emigrated to Melbourne, where he was a member of the firm of Hamilton, Smith and Company in 1854. In 1855 he joined Elder and Company at Adelaide and became a partner in the business which from 1863 was known as Elder Smith and Company, now Elders Limited. ''The Sydney Mail'' was an Australian magazine published weekly in Sydney. It was the weekly edition of ''The Sydney Morning Herald'' newspaper and ran from 1860 to 1938. History ''The Sydney Mail'' was first published on 17 July 1860 by John Fairfax and Sons. In 1871 the magazine was renamed for the first time, and it was published as ''The Sydney Mail and New South Wales Advertiser'' from 1871 to 1912. In 1912 it reverted to its original name, ''The Sydney Mail'', and was published under this masthead until 28 December 1938 when the magazine ceased publication. It was published on a weekly basis and became known for its illustrations. Sydney International
The Sydney International (formerly known as the Championship of New South Wales and New South Wales Open, with various title sponsors), formerly sponsored as the Apia International Sydney from 2012 to 2017, is a professional tennis tournament in Sydney, Australia, that was last played in January 2019. The tournament was played annually at the Sydney Olympic Park Tennis Centre in Sydney Olympic Park. It is one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, dating to 1885. The tournament did not take place 2020 and 2021 due to the ATP Cup tournament. It resumed in 2022. The Sydney International was last noted as an ATP 250 point event on the men's tour and a WTA Premier event on the women's tour. Albert Curtis (tennis)
Albert C. "Snapper" Curtis (26 January 1875 – 12 September 1933) was an Australian tennis player and medical practitioner. Biography Curtis was born in Adelong, New South Wales, and attended Newington College (1889–1892) where as a boarding student he was a noted sportsman. He matriculated in 1893 and became a first year medical student at the University of Sydney. In 1896, with David Edwards, Curtis won the Queensland Doubles Championship. In 1897 he was part of the University A Team in Tennis that included fellow Old Newingtonians David Edwards and Percy Colquhoun. In that year he won the NSW Championship. Curtis was at the University of Sydney until 1902 but was only in third year in 1896 and remained there until 1899. He finally passed the deferred third year exam in 1900. Amber Halliday
Amber Halliday (born 13 November 1979) is a former rower and cyclist from Adelaide, South Australia. She is an Australian national champion, a dual Olympian and a three-time world-champion in lightweight rowing. She rowed for South Australia on nine occasions for six victories in Interstate Regattas and won numerous Australian titles at the Australian National Championships. Rowing career A lightweight sculler, Halliday commenced her rowing at Pembroke School in Adelaide. Her senior club rowing was from the Adelaide University Boat Club. Halliday raced in South Australian representative women's crews who contested the Victoria Cup at the Interstate Regatta. In 1998 that race was in lightweight coxless four and Halliday stroke the IV. Tim Willoughby
Timothy John Willoughby (24 June 1954 – 9 January 2008) was an Australian rower, yachtsman and stockbroker. He was a five-time Australian national champion rower, a dual Olympian and won a bronze medal in the Australian men's eight at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Club and state rowing Born in Adelaide, South Australia in 1954, Willoughby first began to show promise as a rower whilst at St Mark's College at the University of Adelaide, where he was a boat captain in the Adelaide University Boat Club. Willoughby was first selected to represent South Australia in the 1975 senior men's eight which contested the King's Cup at the Interstate Regatta. Jaime Fernandez (rower)
Jaime Francisco Fernandez (born 4 April 1971) is an Australian former rower. He was a national champion, a three-time Olympian and an Australian representative at five World Rowing Championships. He won a silver medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympics in the men's eight. Early life and studies Fernandez was born in Melbourne. He grew up in the remote mining town of Gove, Northern Territory, but moved to Adelaide for high school, where he attended Christian Brothers College. His main sporting interest at the time was Australian Rules Football, but he was required to participate in a summer sport as well, and he selected rowing. Kate Elizabeth Slatter OAM (born 10 November 1971; married name Kate Allen) is an Australian former rower, a sixteen time national champion, world champion and Olympic champion from Adelaide, South Australia. She is a three-time Olympian who in 1996 won Australia's first Olympic gold in women's rowing. Club and state rowing Slatter began rowing at the Adelaide University Boat Club in 1989, and rowed in their victorious women's eight at the 1996 Australian University Games, two weeks after winning gold in Atlanta.
