Achilles
In Greek mythology, Achilles ( ) or Achilleus ( grc-gre, Ἀχιλλεύς) was a hero of the Trojan War, the greatest of all the Greek warriors, and the central character of Homer's '' Iliad''. He was the son of the Nereid Thetis and Peleus, king of Phthia. Achilles' most notable feat during the Trojan War was the slaying of the Trojan prince Hector outside the gates of Troy. Although the death of Achilles is not presented in the ''Iliad'', other sources concur that he was killed near the end of the Trojan War by Paris, who shot him with an arrow. Later legends (beginning with Statius' unfinished epic ''Achilleid'', written in the 1st century AD) state that Achilles was invulnerable in all of his body except for one heel, because when his mother Thetis dipped him in the river Styx as an infant, she held him by one of his heels. Achille Peretti (Alessandria 1857 – New Orleans 1923) was an Italian painter, sculptor and anarchist. Biography During the 1870s, Peretti studied art in Milan at the Brera Academy under the direction of Giuseppe Bertini, Raffaele Casnedi, Luigi Riccardi, Luigi Bisi Luigi Bisi (10 May 1814 – 11 November 1886) was an Italian architect and painter. Achille Le Tonnelier de Breteuil (1781-1864) was a French politician. Early life Achille Le Tonnelier de Breteuil was born on 29 March 1781 in Paris. He was educated at the Collège du Plessis. He graduated from the École Polytechnique. Career Breteuil started his career at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, first in the cabinet and subsequently in Mainz and Stuttgart. Achille Simonetti
Achille Simonetti (12 June 1857 – 19 November 1928) was a prominent Italian violinist and composer, mainly resident in England and Ireland. He was mainly known as a chamber musician and teacher. Life Born in Turin on 12 June 1857, Simonetti left his family in Bologna (this can be gleaned from his letter to Mr Hill (of Hills and Sons) written in 1922,) and completed his studies under Francesco Bianchi, Eugenio Cavallini, Giuseppe Gamba, Charles Dancla (regarded as the last exponent of the classical French school of violin playing), and Camillo Sivori, the last pupil of Niccolo Paganini. Achille Rivarde (31 October 186531 March 1940) was an American-born British violinist and teacher, who worked mainly in Europe and London. Biography Serge Achille Rivarde was born in New York City to a Spanish father and an American mother. Achille Domenico Campisiano (12 November 1837 – 17 April 1908) was an Italian-born French pianist and composer. Also known under the pseudonym Achille de Campisiano, he composed opéras comiques, operettas and opéras bouffes. Biography Born in Naro, in the province of Agrigento, Sicily, he was the son of Salvatore Campisiano, a jeweller, and Maria Carolina Rochia from a family of Sicilian origin who lived in Marseille. It was in Marseille that Achille Campisiano received his first tuition in musical composition, between 1850 and 1857. In 1866 he was hired by the Café de la Renaissance in Montargis. Achille De Bassini
Achille De Bassini (5 May 1819 – 3 July 1881) was an Italian baritone, particularly noted for his performances in Verdi's operas. He created the roles of Francesco Foscari in '' I due Foscari'' (1844), Pasha Seid in '' Il corsaro'' (1848), Miller in ''Luisa Miller'' (1849) and Fra Melitone in ''La forza del destino'' (1862). Bassini was born and studied in Milan, and is thought to have made his début at Voghera in 1837 in the title role of Donizetti's ''Belisario''. Although he had a talent for portraying noble, suffering characters, Verdi also recognized his capacity for humorous roles and wrote the character of Fra Melitone specifically for him. Achille Baquet
Achille Joseph Baquet (November 15, 1885 – November 20, 1955/1956) was an American jazz clarinetist and saxophonist. He was an early musician on the New Orleans jazz scene. Baquet was raised in a musical family. His father, Théogène Baquet, led the Excelsior Brass Band, and his brothers, Harold, and George, were both musicians, George being the most famous of the three. Achille was black (" Creole of Color" in the local terminology), but was light-skinned, and was the only member of the family who was able to pass for white. He learned clarinet from Luis Tio, and played with the Original Dixieland Jazz Band, Papa Jack Laine's Reliance Brass Band, and the Happy Schilling Dance Orchestra. Baquet was thought to have been a member of the Whiteway Jazz Band, but the membership of this ensemble has never been established definitively. Achille Zo (born Jean-Baptiste Achille Zo on 30 July 1826, Bayonne -2 March 1901, Bordeaux) was a French painter of Basque origin. He painted in the academic style with many historical works and genre scenes, especially from Spain. Biography After losing his father at the age of 14, Zo first became an apprentice house painter while taking drawing lessons at the Bayonne Académie de dessin, receiving many prizes for his work. He then spent a few years working in a theatre decoration studio in Bordeaux before going to Paris in 1846 where he joined Thomas Couture, working in his studio for two years and receiving instruction in academic painting. Unable to make a living in the capital, Zo had to return to Bordeaux but was back in Paris in 1852 when he exhibited a painting at the Salon de l'Académie de Peinture titled ''Marchands d'esclaves''. Achille Vianelli or Vianelly (21 December 1803 – 2 April 1894) was an Italian painter of landscapes with genre scenes, often in watercolor. ''Piazza San Gaetano and San Lorenzo Maggiore in Naples'', c. 1845 He was born in Porto Maurizio; he moved as a child to Otranto, where his father was consul for the French government. In 1819, he moved to Naples, where he first worked in the Royal Topographic Office, where he met Giacinto Gigante. With Gigante, he began training first under Jakob Wilhelm Hüber, then in the Academy under Pitloo. He published (with Gigante and others) a series of lithographs in a ''Viaggio pittorico nel Regno delle Due Sicilie'' (1829–1834). Achille Vertunni
Achille Vertunni (Naples, March 1826 –1897) was an Italian painter. Biography Vertunni was a Neapolitan nobleman who initially studied law under Roberto Savarese, although his family had intended for him to become an architect, and enrolled him to study mathematics under Ferdinando de Luca. Vertunni however gravitated towards the visual arts, causing a rift with his father, who would not countenance his son working as a penniless artist and eventually disinherited Achille. He enrolled to study landscape painting under Salvatore Fergola, and after just eight months went on to serve his first apprenticeship under the historical painter Giuseppe Bonolis, and eventually with Francesco De Sanctis. He is said to have been influenced by Gabriele Smargiassi. Achille-Joseph-Étienne Valois (13 January 1785 — 17 December 1862) was a French designer and sculptor who studied for a time in the atelier of Jacques-Louis David and whose sculptural works may be seen in Paris. He also studied with Antoine-Denis Chaudet. Career Among his early works is the Fontaine de Léda (1806–08) in School of Fontainebleau, Fontainebleau style re-sited in the Jardin du Luxembourg. At the restoration of the Bourbons he hastened to execute a bust of Louis XVIII of France, Louis XVIII.
