Abraham Lopes Cardozo
Abraham Lopes Cardozo (1914–February 21, 2006) was ''hazzan'' of Congregation Shearith Israel, the historic Spanish and Portuguese Jews, Spanish and Portuguese synagogue in New York City. Biography Born in Amsterdam, Netherlands, he was the great-grandson of the Chief Rabbi of the Sephardi Jews, Sephardic community in Amsterdam and son of Joseph Lopes Cardozo, musician, and leader of the boy's choir of the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue. Abraham read his first Haftarah at the age of seven in that same synagogue. He attended the Ets-Haim Seminary in Amsterdam, and became active in youth work and teaching. In 1939 he was appointed by Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, Queen Wilhelmina to be the rabbi of the Sephardic community in Surinam (Dutch colony), Surinam, where he met his wife Irma. Hazzan
A ''hazzan'' (; , lit. Hazan) or ''chazzan'' ( he, חַזָּן , plural ; Yiddish ''khazn''; Ladino ''Hasan'') is a Jewish musician or precentor trained in the vocal arts who helps lead the congregation in songful prayer. In English, this prayer leader is often referred to as a cantor, a term also used in Christianity. ''Sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' and the evolution of the hazzan The person leading the congregation in public prayers is called the '' sh'liaḥ tzibbur'' (Hebrew for " emissary of the congregation"). Jewish law restricts this role to adult Jews; among Orthodox Jews, it is restricted to males. In theory, any lay person can be a ''sh'liaḥ tzibbur''; many synagogue-attending Jews will serve in this role from time to time, especially on weekdays or when having a Yartzeit. Queen Beatrix
Beatrix (Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard, ; born 31 January 1938) is a member of the Dutch royal house who reigned as Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 until her abdication in 2013. Beatrix is the eldest daughter of Queen Juliana and her husband, Prince Bernhard of Lippe-Biesterfeld. Upon her mother's accession in 1948, she became heir presumptive. Beatrix attended a public primary school in Canada during World War II, and then finished her primary and secondary education in the Netherlands in the post-war period. In 1961, she received her law degree from Leiden University. In 1966, Beatrix married Claus von Amsberg, a German diplomat, with whom she had three children.
