Autonomous Racing
Autonomous racing, self-driving racing or autonomous motorsports is an evolving sport of racing ground-based wheeled vehicles, controlled by computer. A number of events and series have launched, including the international Formula E spin-off series Roborace. and Self Racing Cars as well as student competitions such as Formula Student Driverless. Background Autonomous racing is relatively new, and is a technology that is rapidly increasing. Roborace is the company starting the world's first motorsports series for driverless cars. The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) started in 2021 and was the first head-to-head race between autonomous racing vehicles. As of July 2023, the IAC is the only active autonomous racing championship. Technology In early 2016, Roborace started working on world's first ever self-driving race car, the so called "Devbot." Formula E
Formula E, officially the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, is an open-wheel single-seater motorsport championship for electric cars. The racing series is the highest class of competition for electrically powered single-seater racing cars. The inaugural championship race was held in Beijing in September 2014. Since 2020, the series has had FIA world championship status. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship season consists of a series of races, each known as an ePrix. These take place in multiple countries and continents around the world, mostly on street circuits created specifically for Formula E on closed public roads in the centre of major cities, with a small number on purpose-built circuits such as Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. A points system is used at each ePrix to determine two annual World Championships: one for the drivers, and one for the constructors (the teams). Roborace
Roborace was a competition with autonomously driving, electrically powered vehicles. Founded in 2015 by Denis Sverdlov, it aimed to be the first global championship for autonomous cars. From 2017 to 2019, the official CEO was 2016–17 Formula E champion, Lucas Di Grassi, who later became a member of Roborace’s supervisory board. The series tested their technology and race formats at FIA Formula E Championship events during 2016–2018. In 2019 Roborace organized Season Alpha, which consisted of 4 trial racing events with several independent teams competing against each other for the first time. In 2020–21 Roborace held Season Beta with 7 competing teams. All teams utilized the same chassis and powertrain, but they had to develop their own real-time computing algorithms and artificial intelligence technologies. Formula Student
Formula Student is a student engineering competition held annually. Student teams from around the world design, build, test, and race a small-scale formula style racing car. The cars are judged on a number of criteria. It is run by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers and uses the same rules as the original Formula SAE with supplementary regulations. Class definitions There are three entry classes in Formula Student, designed to allow progressive learning. Formula Student Class (formerly Class 1) This is the main event, where teams compete with the cars they have designed and built. Teams are judged across six categories and must pass an inspection by judges before being allowed to compete for the dynamic events. There are usually 100-120 teams in this class. Concept Class (formerly Class 2) This is a concept class for teams who only have a project and plan for a Class 1 car. Indy Autonomous Challenge
The Indy Autonomous Challenge (IAC) is the main and, between July 2023 and April 2024, the only active Autonomous racing, racing series for autonomous race cars. The vehicles participating in the IAC are SAE levels, SAE level 4 autonomous robot, autonomous as they are capable of completing circuit laps and overtaking maneuvers without any human intervention. Exclusively made up of student/university teams, each team participating in the competition uses the same vehicle, a custom-built Dallara AV single-seater. The AV-21 was derived from Dallara's Dallara IL-15, IL-15 model with the addition of sensors, actuators and computing hardware necessary for fully autonomous robot, autonomous driving. By 2024, the series was using the Dallara AV-24 specification, with the same base Dallara chassis but an entirely re-engineered compute hardware, sensor suite, and software stack.
