August Bausch
August Bausch (2 March 1818 – 28 February 1909) was a German genre, portrait and history painter of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Life Bausch came from Bonn to the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. From 1835 to 1839, Karl Ferdinand Sohn was his teacher there. After his studies, he worked in Düsseldorf and Bonn. In1839, he exhibited the picture ''Abraham and Isaac's sacrifice'' in Frankfurt. As a history painter, he attracted the attention of the art professor Rudolf Wiegmann with his paintings ''Gretchen and Martha (after Goethe's Faust)'' (1841) and ''Tempelritter auf der Morgenwache'' (1843). However, Bausch made a name for himself as a portrait painter and portrait draughtsman in his home town of Bonn, where he especially created portraits of students, mainly that of his nephew Hermann Deiters. Genre painting (or petit genre), a form of genre art, depicts aspects of everyday life by portraying ordinary people engaged in common activities. One common definition of a genre scene is that it shows figures to whom no identity can be attached either individually or collectively, thus distinguishing it from history paintings (also called ''grand genre'') and portraits. A work would often be considered as a genre work even if it could be shown that the artist had used a known person—a member of his family, say—as a model. In this case it would depend on whether the work was likely to have been intended by the artist to be perceived as a portrait—sometimes a subjective question. Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander
Friedrich Wilhelm August Argelander (22 March 1799 – 17 February 1875) was a German astronomer. He is known for his determinations of stellar brightnesses, positions, and distances. Life and work Argelander was born in Memel in the Kingdom of Prussia (now Klaipėda in Lithuania), the son of a father of Finnish descent, Johann Gottlieb Argelander, and German ( Prussian) mother, Dorothea Wilhelmina Grünlingen. He studied with Friedrich Bessel, whose assistant he became in 1820, and obtained his Ph.D. in 1822 at University of Königsberg. From 1823 until 1837, Argelander was the head of the Finnish observatory, first in Turku and then in Helsinki. He then moved to Bonn, Germany. Felix Becker (art Historian)
Karl Günther Ernst Felix Becker (27 September 1864, Sondershausen - 23 October 1928, Leipzig) was a German art historian, best known today for the project ''Thieme-Becker''. Life He was the son of the glassmaker Johann Albert Adolph Becker (1811–1891) and Johanna Wilhelmine Christiane nee Kumst (1824–1888). He studied art history at Bonn University and Leipzig University, acted as assistant to August Schmarsow and gained his doctorate in 1897 with a thesis on Early Netherlandish painting. He travelled widely before settling in Leipzig as a private scholar - there he and Ulrich Thieme edited the first four volumes of the '' Allgemeinen Lexikons der bildenden Künstler von der Antike bis zur Gegenwart'' until he resigned in 1910 due to ill health. Ulrich Thieme (31 January 1865 in Leipzig – 25 March 1922 in Leipzig) was a German art historian. He was the son of the industrialist and art collector Alfred Thieme (1830–1906), brother of the publisher Georg Thieme (1830–1906) and grandfather of the painter Peter Flinsch (1920–2010). Hermann Board (13 October 1867 – 21 February 1918) was a German architect and art historian. Life Born in Essen, Board was the son of the master mason Hermann Board (d. 1869) and attended the municipal Realschule in Essen. He then completed a four-year apprenticeship as an architect and attended the municipal further education school in Essen, the commercial technical school in Cologne and the Technical University of Berlin. Afterwards, he worked for seven years in the construction office of the mining company and also taught in the construction classes of the municipal technical and further education schools in Essen.
