Atari 7800
The Atari 7800 ProSystem, or simply the Atari 7800, is a home video game console officially released by Atari Corporation in 1986 as the successor to both the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200. It can run almost all Atari 2600 cartridges, making it the first console with backward compatibility. It shipped with a two button controller instead of the 2600-standard CX40 and '' Pole Position II'' as the pack-in game. The European model has a gamepad instead of a joystick. Most of the early releases for the system are ports of 1981–1983 arcade video games. The final wave of 7800 cartridges is closer in style to what was available on other late 1980s consoles, such as '' Scrapyard Dog'' and '' Midnight Mutants''. ''Food Fight'' (also styled as ''Charley Chuck's Food Fight'') is an arcade video game developed by General Computer Corporation and released by Atari, Inc. in March 1983. The player guides Charley Chuck, who is trying to eat an ice cream cone before it melts, while avoiding four chefs bent on stopping him. 1,951 arcade cabinets were sold. ''Food Fight'' was released for the Atari 7800 console in 1986, and also the same year as a cartridge for Atari 8-bit computers styled for the then new Atari XEGS. Jack Tramiel (, ); born Idek Trzmiel (; December 13, 1928 – April 8, 2012) was a Polish- American businessman and Holocaust survivor, best known for founding Commodore International. The Commodore PET, VIC-20, and Commodore 64 are some home computers produced while he was running the company. Tramiel later formed Atari Corporation after he purchased the remnants of the original Atari, Inc. from its parent company. He was one of six people spotlighted when the computer was denoted "Machine of the Year" by ''Time'' magazine in 1982. The video game crash of 1983 (known in Japan as the Atari shock) was a large-scale recession in the video game industry that occurred from 1983 to 1985 in the United States. The crash was attributed to several factors, including market saturation in the number of video game consoles and available games, many of which shovelware, were of poor quality. Waning interest in console games in favor of personal computers also played a role. Home video game revenue peaked at around $3.2 billion in 1983, then fell to around $100 million by 1985 (a drop of almost 97%). The Television Interface Adaptor (TIA) is the custom computer chip which, along with a variant of the MOS Technology 6502, constitutes the heart of the 1977 Atari Video Computer System game console. The TIA generates the screen display, sound effects, and reads the controllers. At the time the Atari VCS was designed, even small amounts of RAM were expensive. The chip was designed without the extra circuitry of a framebuffer, instead requiring detailed programming to create even a simple display. Development of the CO10444/CO11903 TIA was led by Jay Miner, who continued at Atari expanding on the design of the TIA for the Atari 8-bit computers with the ANTIC, CTIA/GTIA and POKEY chips which allow for more graphical and sound capabilities. ''Midnight Mutants'' is an action-adventure game for the Atari 7800 ProSystem, developed by Radioactive Software and published by Atari Corporation in 1990. ''Scrapyard Dog'' is a scrolling platform game published by Atari Corporation for the Atari 7800 in 1990, followed by an Atari Lynx port in 1991. Plot The player controls Louie whose dog, Scraps, was kidnapped by Mr. Big. The object of the game is to rescue Scraps through various stages. Gameplay The Atari 7800 version has 17 stages while the Atari Lynx has 33. Development and release Reception Robert Jung reviewed the Atari Lynx version of the game which was published to IGN. He wrote that, "Despite the cute graphics and the simple plot, this title offers good clean fun for players of all ages" and gave an 8 out of 10 score.
