Astarac
Astarac () (or Estarac) is a region in modern-day departments of Gers and Hautes-Pyrénées. It was historically located in Gascony, a county in the Middle Ages. Astarac was formed as a county out of the partition of the Duchy of Gascony: following the death of García II Sánchez of Gascony, the duchy was partitioned between his sons, with Arnold I, the youngest son, receiving Astarac. Geography Defined as a natural region, Astarac is located in Gascony, south of the department of Gers and north of the department of Hautes-Pyrénées. Bordering on the Lannemezan plateau, it is a very hilly region with clay soil, crossed by several rivers including the Baïse, Arrats and Gers, which have led to the formation of artificial lakes such as the Lac de l'Astarac. Lac De L'Astarac
Lac de l'Astarac, or Astarac reservoir, is a French reservoir in the Gers department, Occitania region of France, managed by the government department of CACG. Geography Lac de l'Astarac covers two communes, Aussos and Bézues-Bajon. Its waters are held back by a dam stretching across the Arrats valley. The lake is unusual in that it stretches over two valleys, the Petit Arrats river valley on the east fork and the Arrats river valley on the west bank, separated by a hillside that ends about from the dam. The lake is thus shaped like a Y. The lake is bounded on the east by a wooded hillside and on the west by the D40 (Route de l'Arrats). History The dam was built in 1976 to collect rainwater and water from the Pyrenees for agricultural use during the dry summers that are common in this area beyond the Lannemezan plateau. Mont-d'Astarac
Mont-d'Astarac (; ) is a commune in the Gers department in southwestern France. Geography History Its history goes back to the 930s, when it became the first capital of Astarac. It was on the feudal motte, still visible today, that Arnaud Garcia established his castle, having inherited the County of Astarac from his father Count de Gascogne, Garcia Sanchez (called the Crooked), grandson of the count of Castille. It is worth seeing for its monuments - tower and church - registered among the Historic Monuments of France, and for its beautiful murals dating to the 15th century. García II Sánchez Of Gascony
García II Sánchez ( Basque: ''Gartzia Antso'', French: ''Garsie-Sanche le Tors'' or ''le Courbé'', Gascon: ''Gassia Sans'', Latin: ''Garsia Sancius Corvum''; died 930), called the Bent, was Duke of Gascony from sometime before 887 to his death. He was probably a son of Sancho Sánchez or of Sancho Mitarra, though older sources give a genealogy with a Spanish origin.Higounet, p 44, calls it "phantasmagorical". Masseube
Masseube (; ''Masseuva'' in Gascon) is a commune in the Gers department in the Occitanie region in southwestern France. Geography History Masseube ("The farmhouse of the forest") was originally the name of a farm belonging to Escaladieu Abbey, in Bigorre. In 1274, the Abbey and Bernard IV of Astarac founded a bastide in Masseube. It got its customary laws 2 years later. The bastide still has its streets at right angles, an old house which is now the Mairie, and timbered houses. During the Nazi occupation of Vichy France, there was a Jewish internment camp. Some of the Jews who were originally involuntarily transported to the Gurs internment camp were then transported to the internment camp in Masseube. There were around 250 Jews interned in the camp in 1940. There were no medical services, showers, or hot water provided to the Jews in the camp. There was also severe food rationing.
