Asaphodes Beata
''Asaphodes beata'' (also known as the dotted green carpet moth) is a species of moth in the family Geometridae. It is endemic to New Zealand and is a relatively common species that can be found throughout the country in native forest or scrub habitat. It can be distinguished from its close relative ''Asaphodes adonis'' by the colour of its hind wings. The larvae of this species feeds on watercress but tends to be inactive during the day. If threatened it will mimic a twig dropping to the ground. The adult moths are on the wing from October to March and are said to be attracted to white rātā. The white markings on the forewing of the adults are variable in appearance. Taxonomy This species was first described by Arthur Gardiner Butler in 1877 as ''Cidaria beata'' using a specimen from the collection of J. D. Enys. Larentiinae
Larentiinae is a subfamily of moths containing roughly 5,800 species that occur mostly in the temperate regions of the world. They are generally considered a subfamily of the geometer moth family (Geometridae) and are divided into a few large or good-sized tribes, and numerous very small or even monotypic ones which might not always be valid. Well-known members are the "pug moths" of the Eupitheciini and the "carpets", mainly of the Cidariini and Xanthorhoini. The subfamily was described by Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel in 1845. ''Asaphodes philpotti'' is a moth in the family Geometridae. It is Endemism, endemic to New Zealand and has been found in the South Island as well as one observation in Wainuiomata in the North Island. This species inhabits native forest and larvae are hosted by species in the genera ''Hydrocotyle'' and ''Cardamine.'' Taxonomy This species was first described by Louis Beethoven Prout in 1927 and named ''Xanthorhoe philpotti''. Prout named this species in honour of Alfred Philpott, the entomologist who recognised that two separate species were mixed as ''Xanthorhoe beata''. In 1939 Prout placed this species in the genus ''Larentia''. This placement was not accepted by New Zealand taxonomists. In 1988 J. S. Dugdale placed this species in the genus ''Asaphodes''. This genus is endemic to New Zealand and species within this genus are found throughout New Zealand including the North, South and Stewart / Rakiura Islands. Louis Beethoven Prout
Louis Beethoven Prout (1864–1943) was an English entomologist and musicologist. Prout specialised in the insect order of Lepidoptera, especially the Geometridae, or geometer moths, on which he was a foremost authority. His notebooks and publications formed the basis of the Geometridae card indexes in the Natural History Museum, the then British Museum (Natural History). He was the secretary of the North London Natural History Society and worked in association with the Natural History Museum at Tring.
