Arthur Shelton
Arthur Edwin Shelton (August 15, 1853 – February 1, 1937) was the third mayor of the town of Calgary, Alberta. Shelton came to Calgary around 1884 running a furniture business on Stephen Avenue. He served as town councillor during the mayoral tenure of George Clift King from 1886 to 1888. Shelton was elected mayor in the 1888 election and served from January 16, 1888, to January 21, 1889. During his term, the Langevin Bridge was completed and the city begun construction of the waterworks system. After his mayoral term, he returned to operate his furniture business. However, his name disappears from city directories in 1890. 1888 Calgary Municipal Election
The 1888 Calgary municipal election was held on January 3, 1888 to elect a Mayor and six Councillors to sit on the fourth Calgary Town Council from January 16, 1888 to January 21, 1889. The 1888 election was the first after the Town Council had expanded from four councillors to six councillors. Background Nominations for council opened on December 27, 1887 and E. P. Davis was named returning officer, and the town fire hall was selected as his headquarters. Former Mayors George Murdoch, George Clift King and Arthur Edwin Shelton were nominated for the position of mayor. A public meeting was called a 2 p.m. later in the day to give speeches, which became so pointed and personal that several of the Aldermanic candidates withdrew their nominations. Water supply is the provision of water by public utilities, commercial organisations, community endeavors or by individuals, usually via a system of pumps and pipes. Public water supply systems are crucial to properly functioning societies. These systems are what supply drinking water to populations around the globe. Aspects of service quality include continuity of supply, water quality and water pressure. Langevin Bridge
The Reconciliation Bridge (formerly the Langevin Bridge) is a through truss bridge in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. It connects Downtown Calgary with north-central Calgary communities such as Bridgeland and Crescent Heights, by spanning the Bow River between 4th Avenue South and Memorial Drive. The bridge is part of the Bow River pathway system. On January 23, 2017, Calgary City Council voted to change the name from Langevin Bridge to the Reconciliation Bridge. Stephen Avenue is a major pedestrian mall in downtown Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The mall is the portion of 8 Avenue SW between 4 Street SW and 1 Street SE. George Clift King
George Clift King (April 23, 1848 – July 18, 1935) was the second mayor of the town of Calgary, District of Alberta, Alberta. Early life King was born in Chelmsford, England in 1848. At the age of 26, he left England for Canada, arriving in Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, in 1874. North-West Mounted Police King joined the North-West Mounted Police and was part of the first contingent sent west to establish Fort Calgary in 1875. Constable King is often called ''Calgary's First Citizen'', since he was the first NWMP officer to cross the Bow River and set foot on the future site of Calgary. This title is also sometimes given to Sam Livingston, another Calgary pioneer who arrived in the Calgary area in 1874; however, Calgary's first European settler was John Glenn (Alberta), John Glenn who settled at Fish Creek in 1873.
