Art UK
Art UK is a cultural, education charity in the United Kingdom, previously known as the Public Catalogue Foundation. Since 2003, it has digitised more than 300,000 paintings, sculptures and other artworks by more than 53,700 artists. It was founded for the project, completed between 2003 and 2012, of obtaining sufficient rights to enable the public to see images of all the approximately 210,000 oil paintings in public ownership in the United Kingdom. Originally the paintings were made accessible through a series of affordable book catalogues, mostly by county. Later the same images and information were placed on a website in partnership with the BBC, originally called ''Your Paintings'', hosted as part of the BBC website. The renaming in 2016 coincided with the transfer of the website to a stand-alone site. Works by some 50,000 painters held in more than 3,000 collections are now on the website. Background The Public Catalogue Foundation formed in 2003, with the objective of documenting all oil paintings in public ownership within the United Kingdom. The UCL Slade School of Fine Art (informally The Slade) is the art school of University College London (UCL) and is based in London, England. ''Britain's Lost Masterpieces'' is a factual BBC Four documentary television series that aims to uncover overlooked art treasures in British public collections, in conjunction with Art UK. It is presented by Bendor Grosvenor, along with art historian Jacky Klein (series 1) and Emma Dabiri (series 2 to 5). The series also features the art restoration work of Simon Gillespie. In North American syndication, the series is called ''The Art Detectives''. Development Each episode begins with Grosvenor locating a prospective masterpiece in the digitized collection of Art UK. The restoration work of Gillespie's shop is key to a successful attribution. ''The Culture Show'' is a British magazine programme about books, art, film, architecture, music, visual fashion and the performing arts. The show was broadcast weekly on BBC Two between 2004 and 2015. Early history Launched in November 2004, the show initially transmitted on Thursday nights in a 7 p.m. slot, lasting 60 minutes.
