Arma Engineering Company
The Arma Engineering Company was an American military technology manufacturer founded in New York in 1918 by Arthur Davis and David Mahood. An early product was the U.S. naval Torpedo Data Computer, a special-purpose ship-mounted analog computer for targeting torpedoes, first deployed by the U.S. Navy in 1938. Another Arma product was a gyrocompass based on technology originally developed by the German company Anschütz. Arma was subsequently sued by Sperry for patent infringement. The dispute was eventually resolved by the U.S. Navy contracting with both companies, with Sperry as principal supplier. Torpedo Data Computer
The Torpedo Data Computer (TDC) was an early electromechanical analog computer used for torpedo fire-control on American submarines during World War II. Britain, Germany, and Japan also developed automated torpedo fire control equipment, but none were as advanced as the US Navy's TDC, as it was able to automatically track the target rather than simply offering an instantaneous firing solution. This unique capability of the TDC set the standard for submarine torpedo fire control during World War II. While the TDC's target tracking abilities were unique for submarine torpedo fire control during WWII, target tracking was used on surface ship torpedo fire control systems by a number of nations (see references in this article tUS destroyeranJapanese torpedo fire control). Gyrocompass
A gyrocompass is a type of non-magnetic compass which is based on a fast-spinning disc and the rotation of the Earth (or another planetary body if used elsewhere in the universe) to find geographical Direction (geometry), direction automatically. A gyrocompass makes use of one of the seven fundamental ways to determine the heading of a vehicle. A gyroscope is an essential component of a gyrocompass, but they are different devices; a gyrocompass is built to use the effect of gyroscopic precession, which is a distinctive aspect of the general gyroscopic effect. Sperry Corporation was a major American equipment and electronics company whose existence spanned more than seven decades of the 20th century. Sperry ceased to exist in 1986 following a prolonged hostile takeover bid engineered by Burroughs Corporation, which merged the combined operation under the new name Unisys. Some of Sperry's former divisions became part of Honeywell, Lockheed Martin, Raytheon Technologies, and Northrop Grumman.
