Ariel D. Procaccia
Ariel D. Procaccia is the Gordon McKay Professor of Computer Science at Harvard University. He was previously an associate professor of computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. He is known for his research in artificial intelligence (AI) and theoretical computer science, especially for his work on computational aspects of game theory, social choice, and fair division. He is the founder of Spliddit, a fair division website. Biography Procaccia received his Ph.D. ''summa cum laude'' in computer science from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in 2009. His doctoral dissertation won the IFAAMAS Victor Lesser Distinguished Dissertation Award for the best dissertation in the area of autonomous agents and multi-agent systems. Hebrew (; ; ) is a Northwest Semitic language of the Afroasiatic language family. Sloan Fellowship
The Sloan Research Fellowships are awarded annually by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation since 1955 to "provide support and recognition to early-career scientists and scholars". This program is one of the oldest of its kind in the United States. Fellowships were initially awarded in physics, chemistry, and mathematics. Awards were later added in neuroscience (1972), economics (1980), computer science (1993), computational and evolutionary molecular biology (2002), and ocean sciences or earth systems sciences (2012). Fair division is the problem in game theory of dividing a set of resources among several people who have an entitlement to them so that each person receives their due share. That problem arises in various real-world settings such as division of inheritance, partnership dissolutions, divorce settlements, electronic frequency allocation, airport traffic management, and exploitation of Earth observation satellites. It is an active research area in mathematics, economics (especially social choice theory), dispute resolution, etc. The central tenet of fair division is that such a division should be performed by the players themselves, maybe using a mediator but certainly not an arbiter as only the players really know how they value the goods.
