Anissa Rawda Najjar
Anissa Rawda Najjar (; June 26, 1913 – January 14, 2016) was a Lebanese feminist and women's rights activist. She was a co-founder and longtime leader of the Village Welfare Society (Jam`iyat In`ash Al-Qarya). As well, she introduced the Lebanon Chapter of CISV. Early life Anissa Rawda (her original surname is also seen as "Raouda" or "Rawdah") was born in Beirut, the daughter of landowner and pharmacist Salim Anis Rawda and Zalfa Amine Najjar. The legal status of women in Lebanon has improved since the 20th century; however, gender equality still remains problematic. Active feminist movements in Lebanon are trying to overcome the existing legal and sociopolitical discrimination. During the 17 October Revolution in 2019, women called for a reform of the sectarian system in Lebanon and petitioned to acquire equal rights in the spheres of citizenship, inheritance and protection against domestic violence. History Lebanese women obtained women's suffrage on February 8, 1953. Since that time, Lebanese women have made progress towards sustainable empowerment goals. Fouad Najjar
Fouad Najjar (1909–1992) was a Lebanese agronomist and politician who served as minister of agriculture in 1958 and in 1964. He was also minister of agriculture and PTT between 1959 and 1960. Early life and education Najjar was born in Abadiyeh, Lebanon, in December 1909. He hailed from a Druze family. His parents were Amine and Adla Najjar. Najjar was a graduate of the University College of Aley and French Lycée of Beirut. Then he graduated from the Higher National School of Agronomy in Montpellier, France, and received a Ph.D. in agronomy in 1932. Career and activities Following his graduation Najjar established an agricultural company and cofounded with his uncle an agricultural cooperation in Abadiyeh in 1937. He worked as a lecturer at the American University of Beirut from 1938 to 1948. He was appointed minister of agriculture in 1958.
