Andrew J. Hanson
Andrew J. Hanson (born 1944) is an American Theoretical physics, theoretical physicist and computer scientist. Hanson is best known in theoretical physics as the co-discoverer of the Eguchi–Hanson space, Eguchi–Hanson metric, the first gravitational instanton. This Einstein metric is asymptotically locally Euclidean and self-dual, closely parallel to the Yang-Mills instanton. He is also known as the co-author of ''Constrained Hamiltonian Systems'' and of ''Gravitation, Gauge Theories, and Differential Geometry'', which attempted to bridge the gap between theoretical physicists and mathematicians at a time when concepts relevant to the two disciplines were rapidly unifying. An instanton (or pseudoparticle) is a notion appearing in theoretical and mathematical physics. An instanton is a classical solution to equations of motion with a finite, non-zero action, either in quantum mechanics or in quantum field theory. Roman Jackiw
Roman Wladimir Jackiw (; ; November 8, 1939 – June 14, 2023) was a Polish-born American theoretical physicist and Dirac Medallist. Biography Born in Lubliniec, Poland in 1939 to a Ukrainian family, the family later moved to Austria and Germany before settling in New York City when Jackiw was about 10. Jackiw earned his undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and his PhD from Cornell University in 1966 under Hans Bethe and Kenneth Wilson. He was a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Center for Theoretical Physics from 1969 until his retirement. He retained his affiliation in emeritus status in 2019. PLATO (Programmed Logic for Automatic Teaching Operations), also known as Project Plato and Project PLATO, was the first generalized computer-assisted instruction system. Starting in 1960, it ran on the University of Illinois's ILLIAC I computer. Gleb Wataghin (November 3, 1899 in Birzula, Russian Empire, now Podilsk, Odesa Region, Ukraine – October 10, 1986 in Turin, Italy) was an Italian theoretical and experimental physicist and a great scientific leader who gave a great impulse to the teaching and research on physics in two continents: in the University of São Paulo, São Paulo, Brazil; and in the University of Turin, Turin, Italy. SS ''Andrea Doria'' () was a luxury transatlantic ocean liner of the Italian Line (Società di navigazione Italia), put into service in 1953. The Manhattan Project was a research and development program undertaken during World War II to produce the first nuclear weapons.
