Almendares (baseball Club)
The Almendares B.B.C., also known as the Alacranes del Almendares, was one of the oldest and most distinguished baseball teams in the old Cuban League, which existed from 1878 to 1961. Almendares represented the Almendares District on the outskirts of the old city of Havana—when the league was founded it was still considered a suburban area, but later became a district within the enlarged city. Almendares was one of the most successful franchises in the Cuban League. In their early history they were known by their colors as the Blues; later they adopted the name of ''Alacranes'' (Spanish: ''Scorpions''). Throughout their existence they had a famous rivalry with the Habana baseball club. Cuban League
The Cuban League ( Spanish: ''Liga cubana'') was one of the earliest and longest lasting professional baseball leagues outside the United States, operating in Cuba from 1878 to 1961. The schedule usually operated during the winter months, so the league was sometimes known as the "Cuban Winter League." The league generally comprised 3 to 5 teams, and was centered in Havana, though it sometimes included teams from outlying cities such as Matanzas or Santa Clara. Despite its name, it was not the only professional league active in Cuba during that time, nor was it always the most popular; Peter C. Cuban National Baseball System
The Cuban baseball league system is not a single baseball league; rather it is a structure of leagues and series that are governed by the Baseball Federation of Cuba and culminate in national championships and the selection of the Cuba national baseball team. In the Cuban National Series, players play for the provinces in which they reside, with each province in Cuba (plus Havana) represented by a team. Starting in 2023, the top six teams from the National Series qualify for the top-level winter Cuban Elite League. Andrés Fleitas
Andrés Fleitas lei'-tasz(November 8, 1916 – December 18, 2011) was a professional Cuban baseball catcher and first baseman. Listed at 5' 11", 175 lb., he batted and threw right handed. Born in Las Villas Province, Fleitas came from a baseball family, as his older brother, Ángel Fleitas, played briefly for the Washington Senators of the American League. Despite never reaching the Major Leagues as his brother did, Fleitas enjoyed a solid career in the Cuban Winter League and Minor League Baseball. Cliff Fannin
Clifford Bryson Fannin (May 13, 1924 – December 11, 1966) was an American professional baseball pitcher who appeared in Major League Baseball from –. The right-hander played his entire career for the St. Louis Browns. Born in Louisa, Kentucky, he stood tall and weighed . In 164 Major League games pitched, 98 as a starting pitcher, Fannin compiled a win–loss mark of 34–51, with an earned run average of 4.85 and 352 strikeouts. He logged six shutouts and 28 complete games, and earned six saves. Clemente Carreras González (March 25, 1914 – November 19, 1989) was a Cuban professional baseball third baseman, second baseman, and left fielder. Nicknamed "Sungo", he played in the Negro leagues from 1937 to 1941, including two major league seasons for the New York Cubans from 1940 to 1941. He also played for the Cubans in 1938 and with the Eastern Cuban Stars in 1937 and 1939. Carreras played with Alijadores de Tampico of the Mexican League (LMB), the highest level of professional baseball in Mexico, in 1943. Bobby Bragan
Robert Randall Bragan (October 30, 1917 – January 21, 2010) was an American shortstop, catcher, manager, and coach in Major League Baseball and an influential minor league executive. His professional baseball career encompassed 73 years, from his first season as a player in the Class D Alabama–Florida League in 1937, to 2009, the last full year of his life, when he was still listed as a consultant to the Texas Rangers' organization. Bragan played eight seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies and Brooklyn Dodgers in the 1940s, before going on to manage the Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians and Milwaukee/Atlanta Braves in the late 1950s and 1960s.
