Livingston, Texas
Livingston is a town in and the county seat of Polk County, Texas, United States. With a population of 5,640 at the United States Census, 2020, 2020 census, it is the largest city in Polk County. It is located approximately south of Lufkin, Texas, Lufkin and roughly northeast of Houston and was originally settled in 1835 as Springfield. Its name was changed in 1846 to Livingston, when it was designated as the county seat of Polk County. The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe of Texas, Alabama-Coushatta Indian Reservation is located to the east of Livingston. These people traditionally occupied territory in what is now east Texas and Louisiana. The United States Census, 2000, 2000 census reported a resident population of 480 persons within the reservation. The tribe has nearly 1200 enrolled members. Big Thicket
The Big Thicket is the name given to a somewhat imprecise region of a heavily forested area of Southeast Texas in the United States. This area represents a portion of the mixed pine-hardwood forests or " Piney Woods" of the Southeast US. The National Park Service established the Big Thicket National Preserve (BTNP) within the region in 1974 and it is recognized as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO. Although the diversity of animals in the area is high for a temperate zone with over 500 vertebrates, it is the complex mosaic of ecosystems and plant diversity that is particularly remarkable. Biologists have identified at least eight, and up to eleven, ecosystems in the Big Thicket area. Martin Gurule
Martin Edward Gurule (November 7, 1969 – November 27, 1998) was an American prisoner who successfully escaped from death row in Texas in 1998. It was the first successful breakout from Texan death row since Raymond Hamilton was broken out by Bonnie and Clyde on January 16, 1934. Life Martin Gurule was raised by his father and grandmother.
