''Alfapet'' was the original Swedish name for the popular word game ''Scrabble''. In 1954, the Swedish board game company Alga was granted a license by J. W. Spear & Sons to market ''Scrabble'' in Sweden. For almost four decades, Alga sold the game under the name ''Alfapet'' (wordplay on , the Swedish word for "alphabet"). In the 1980s, Alga was bought by BRIO, which retained Alga as its board games division. In the early 1990s, Mattel acquired J. W. Spear & Sons and rescinded the BRIO/Alga license in order to market the game in Sweden themselves as ''Scrabble''. However, BRIO/Alga retained the right to the name ''Alfapet'', and quickly designed and marketed a similar word game using that name. Alga Aktiebolag, AB is a board game publisher founded in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1917, which has produced board games in multiple languages for the Nordic countries. It was formed as a subsidiary of Pressbyrån, a chain of convenience stores. Alga took care of the distribution of postcards and writing materials. In 1938, it started manufacturing board games. In 1940, Pressbyrån itself took over the production of postcards, and the connection between Alga and Pressbyrån was broken by the Bonnier Group, which owned both companies. BRIO
Brio (stylized BRIO) is a wooden toy company founded in Sweden. The company was founded in the small town of Boalt, Scania, Götaland in 1884 by Basket making, basket maker Ivar Bengtsson. For a long time the company was based in Osby, Scania, in southern Sweden. In 1908 Ivar's three sons took the company over and gave it the name "BRIO", which is an acronym for: BRöderna ('the brothers') Ivarsson (in) Osby. In 2006 BRIO moved its headquarters to Malmö, Scania. It is best known for its wooden toy trains, sold in Europe since 1958.
