The Alcorn State Braves are the college football team of Alcorn State University. Cedric Thomas
Cedric Thomas is an American college football coach and former player. He is the Head Coach at Alcorn State University in Lorman, Mississippi, a position he has held since December 2023. Thomas previously served as the defensive coordinator at Alcorn State and was appointed to the Head Coach position after the resignation of long-time coach Fred McNair. Fred McNair (born December 11, 1968) is an American gridiron football coach and former player. He is the tight ends coach for Southern University, a position he has held since 2024. He was the head football coach at Alcorn State University from 2016 to 2023. 2015 Alcorn State Braves Football Team
The 2015 Alcorn State Braves football team represented Alcorn State University in the 2015 NCAA Division I FCS football season. The Braves were led by fourth-year head coach Jay Hopson and played their home games at Casem-Spinks Stadium. They were a member of the East Division of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) and finished with a record of 9–4 as SWAC champions after they defeated Grambling State in the SWAC Championship Game. Alcorn State then played in the Celebration Bowl against North Carolina A&T, losing by a score of 41–34. On January 30, 2016, head coach Jay Hopson resigned to become the head coach at Southern Miss. 1994 Alcorn State Braves Football Team
The 1994 Alcorn State Braves football team represented Alcorn State University as a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) during the 1994 NCAA Division I-AA football season. Led by head fourth-year head coach Cardell Jones, the Braves compiled an overall record of 8–3–1 with a mark of 6–1 in conference play, sharing the SWAC title with Grambling State. Alcorn State advanced to the NCAA Division I-AA Football Championship playoffs, where they lost to the eventual national champion, Youngstown State, in the first round. Quarterback Steve McNair won the Walter Payton Award as most outstanding offensive player in NCAA Division I-AA. He was the second, following Jerry Rice, and most recent I-AA player to earn a trip to New York City as a finalist for presentation of the Heisman Trophy.
