Alaska Library Association
The Alaska Library Association (AkLA) is a professional organization for Alaska's librarians and library workers. It is headquartered in Fairbanks, Alaska. It was founded July 5, 1972, and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 1997. AkLA has two active chapters, one in Anchorage and one in Juneau. AkLA publishes ''The Newspoke'' (1981 – present) for news about the association and ''The Sourdough'' (1969 – present) which is their professional journal. In addition they maintain a set of ''Culturally Responsive Guidelines for Alaska Public Libraries'' to guide libraries in appropriate services to indigenous patrons. The American Library Association (ALA) is a nonprofit organization based in the United States that promotes libraries and library education internationally. It is the oldest and largest library association in the world. History 19th century During the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, 103 librarians, 90 men, and 13 women, responded to a call for a "Convention of Librarians" to be held October 4–6, 1876, at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania. At the end of the meeting, according to Edward G. A librarian is a person who professionally works managing information. Librarians' common activities include providing access to information, conducting research, creating and managing information systems, creating, leading, and evaluating educational programs, and providing instruction on information literacy to users. Fairbanks is a Municipal home rule, home rule city and the county seat, borough seat of the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, United States.
