Airdrieonians Football Club is a Scottish professional football team in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, who are members of the Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL) and play in the . They were formed in 2002 as Airdrie United Football Club following the folding of the original Airdrieonians club, formed in 1878. The club's official name was changed in 2013 with the approval of the Scottish Football Association to the traditional name of Airdrieonians. As with the previous club, this is often colloquially shortened to simply "Airdrie". The club have won three trophies in their short history – the Scottish Second Division in 2003–04 and the Challenge Cup in 2008–09 and 2023–24. The Excelsior Stadium, officially The Albert Bartlett Stadium, is a football stadium in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, Scotland. The Scottish Football League (SFL) is a defunct league featuring professional and semi-professional football clubs mostly from Scotland.One club, Berwick Rangers, is based in the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, which is located approximately 4 km south of the Anglo-Scottish border. Stephen Docherty
Stephen Docherty (born 18 February 1976) is a Scottish former football player and coach. He previously played in the Scottish Football League for Partick Thistle and Clydebank. He also played for both Airdrieonians and their re-inacarnation Airdrie United. Playing career He scored the first goal for the reborn Airdrie United club, in a 1–0 win over Forfar Athletic at New Broomfield. He was also captain of the club and was inducted into the Airdrie United "Hall of Fame" in 2007. Docherty dropped down to junior level, joining Bathgate Thistle in 2006. He was part of the Bathgate team that defeated Cumnock Juniors 2–1 to win the 2008 Scottish Junior Cup Final, assisting Paul McGrillen's winning goal. Sandy Stewart (footballer)
Alexander Stewart (born 14 October 1965) is a Scottish football coach and former player. He played as a left-back for Hearts, Kilmarnock, Airdrieonians, Partick Thistle and Airdrie United. He became the latter club's first manager, and has been an assistant manager at several clubs in Scotland, England, the United States and India, working with Owen Coyle. Playing career Early years Stewart was born in Bellshill. He grew up supporting Rangers and trained as a welder on leaving school. The Scottish Junior Football Association, West Region was one of three regions of the SJFA which organised its own distinct league and cup competitions. The SJFA used to be split into six regions, but in 2002 they decided to reform into three (East, North and West) to try to ensure more games between the top clubs and hence increase their revenues.
