Ailsa Farms
Ailsa Farms, also known as Haledon Hall and Hobart Manor, is a historic house located at 300 Pompton Road in the township of Wayne in Passaic County, New Jersey, United States. It was purchased by the state of New Jersey in 1948 from the family of Garret Hobart, 24th vice president of the United States and is now located on the campus of William Paterson University. Ailsa Farms was added to the National Register of Historic Places on April 30, 1976, for its significance in architecture, politics, and social history. With History and description In 1877, Scottish immigrant John MacCullough, a wealthy wool-industry businessman, built a two-story fieldstone house in the manor of a castle, with two octagonal turrets. In 1902, it was purchased by Jennie Tuttle Hobart, widow of the former vice president Garret Hobart and became the weekend retreat and summer residence of the family. Esther Jane "Jennie" Hobart ( Tuttle; April 30, 1849 – January 8, 1941) was the wife of Vice President Garret Hobart. She served as the second lady of the United States from 1897 until her husband's death in 1899, and was a philanthropist and community activist in New Jersey. Hobart often served as White House hostess because the first lady, Ida Saxton McKinley, suffered from epilepsy and other chronic ailments.
