Ahmad (horse)
Ahmad (1975-1995) was an Argentine Thoroughbred racehorse who was the Argentine Horse of the Year in 1979 and leading sire in 1991. Background Ahmad was bred by Haras Ojo de Agua and foaled on October 5, 1975. Ahmad's sire, Good Manners, was bred and raced in the United States, where he won the Haggin Stakes and ran second in the San Antonio Handicap, before being exported to Argentina at Haras Ojo de Agua. His dam Azyade was unraced. Ahmad was her sixth foal, and the most successful on the track. During his racing career, Ahmad was trained by Carlos Ferro. Ahmad was noted as being of "elegant make". Racing career Ahmad started racing at the age of three, winning his debut at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo. He won two more races before running in and winning his first stakes race, the Group 3 Premio Libertad. Milady Handicap
The Adoration Stakes (formerly known as the Milady Handicap) is an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually during May at Santa Anita Park. The event is open to fillies and mares, age three and up, willing to race one and one-sixteenth miles on the dirt. The current purse is $100,000. The event lost its Grade III classification since it has not been run since 2018. History The race was founded in 1952 as the Milady Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. Usually run on the dirt, the Milady was run on an all-weather artificial dirt surface from 2007 to 2013. The race was renamed as the Marjorie L. Everett Handicap in 2012 to honor Marjorie L. Evereett, former chairman, president and CEO of Hollywood Park who died on March 23, 2012. When Hollywood Park was closed at the end of 2013, the race was moved to Santa Anita and renamed as the Adoration Stakes. Vanity Handicap
The Beholder Mile Stakes is a Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares aged three and up. It is run over a distance of one mile on the dirt each year in March at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, California. History The event was inaugurated in 1940 as the Vanity Handicap at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California over the current distance of one mile. In 1968 Gamely won carrying a record weight for a winner of 131 pounds in the race. Her owner William Haggin Perry had the three placegetters in the race which carried a record high stakes amount for the fillies and mares of $79,650. Originally an open handicap for fillies and mares aged three years and up, in 1987 it was changed to an invitational handicap for selected fillies and mares. Breeders' Cup Distaff
The Breeders' Cup Distaff is a Weight for Age Thoroughbred horse race for fillies and mares, 3 years old and up. Known as the Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic between 2008 and 2012, it is held annually at a different racetrack in the United States or Canada as part of the Breeders' Cup World Championships. It is the top ranked race for fillies and mares in North America, and often decides the title for champion three-year-old and / or champion older filly or mare. Paseana (August 23, 1987 – June 21, 2006) was an Argentine-bred Thoroughbred racemare who competed very successfully in Argentina and in the United States, where she won 10 Grade 1 races. She received two Eclipse Awards and was also elected to the Racing Hall of Fame. Breeding She was by the stakes winner and successful sire Ahmad. The Gran Premio Nacional, or Argentine Derby, is a Group 1 flat horse race in Argentina open to three-year-olds run over a distance of at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo. It is the third race in the Argentinian Triple Crown and is one of the oldest and most influential races in Latin American racing. History The Gran Premio Nacional has been run at Hipódromo Argentino de Palermo annually since 1884. By 1923, the year the Uruguayan entry Sisley won, the purse was worth $40,000. In 1933, the favorite Hasta Hoy was attacked by masked men the night before the race. His attendant was held at gunpoint while Hasta Hoy's abdomen was stabbed. Hasta Hoy was left unable to run, leaving Requiebro and Tamesis to dead heat for first in a field of ten, the smallest in the race up to that point.
